DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: Paul D. Nelson (ETH Zurich)\n\nTitle: The o
rbit method\, microlocal analysis and applications to L-functions\n\nAbstra
ct: I will describe how the orbit method can be developed in a quantitativ
e form\, along the lines of microlocal analysis\, and applied to local prob
lems in representation theory and global problems concerning automorphic fo
rms. The local applications include asymptotic expansions of relative chara
cters. The global applications include moment estimates and subconvex bound
s for L-functions. These results are the subject of two papers\, the first
joint with Akshay Venkatesh:\n\narxiv.org/abs/1805.07750\n\narxiv.org/abs/2
