Review of étale cohomology.
In 1940s, André Weil proposed his famous conjectures on local zeta functions of varieties over finite fields. He noted that a nice cohomology theory for varieties over finite fields could prove the conjectures, leading Grothendieck to define étale cohomology. The goal of this talk is to introduce étale cohomology and to give a cohomological explanation to Weil conjecture.
