On Tuesday, September 21, Sylvester James “Jim” Gates, Jr. ’73, PhD ’77—renowned theoretical physicist, educator and public servant—will deliver an in-person Karl Taylor Compton Lecture: “A Physics Faculty Career Retrospective: Research, Teaching and Service.”
Since the first Compton Lecture in 1957, the series has highlighted leaders noted for their universality of thought and their influence on human values.
Professor Gates’s distinguished 50-year career of university-level teaching began at MIT, where he taught math and physics to students in Project Interphase (now Interphase EDGE) while working toward his PhD. A passionate advocate for the advancement of science, he was a devoted member of the University of Maryland community for 33 years, before joining the Brown University faculty in 2017. In recognition of a career that has brilliantly balanced a commitment to science and service, President Obama awarded him the 2011 National Medal of Science.
This event will be recorded and posted to the Compton Lectures website after the event.
