Marking fifty years since the 1976 Cambridge recombinant DNA debate, this symposium convenes historians, scientists, policymakers, and journalists. Together, they will examine how emerging technologies have been identified, debated, and governed, from the recombinant DNA discussions of the 1970s to current conversations around AI and synthetic biology.

Structured as a series of moderated conversations, the program explores key questions such as who raises the alarm, how institutions respond, and how public trust is built and sustained over time. The symposium is hosted by Ian Coss, creator of The Big Dig podcast from GBH News.

The Existential Risk, Emerging Technology, and Democracy symposium is being held in conjunction with the new theatrical production, No Recombination Without Representation. Performances will occur at Sullivan Chamber in Cambridge City Hall.

This symposium was made possible through the generous contributions of MIT Museum supporters Phil and Ann Sharp and MIT’s Department of Science, Technology, and Society. This program is part of the MIT Museum’s year-long exploration of TIME, and is part of the Massachusetts 250 activities celebrating the many “firsts” and innovations created in our state through the last 250 years.

View select artworks and consider how art and architecture have enhanced MIT's campus design, featuring artworks by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Alicja Kwade, and Cai Guo-Qiang.

Many of the public artworks seen on the tour is made possible by the MIT Percent-for-Art Program, administered by the List Visual Arts Center, that allocates a portion of the project funds to commission art for each new major renovation or campus construction project. The policy was formally instituted in 1968, but earlier collaborations between artists and architects can be found on MIT’s campus.

This program is free, but registration is required.

In this fun and hands-on program, award-winning scientist and author Dr. Ainissa Ramirez will share the work of an inventor who changed the world—Jim West, the creator of the microphone.

Participants will make their own microphone using balloons and paper cones, followed by a storytime reading of Spark: Jim West’s Electrifying Adventures in Creating the Microphone. This program is designed with ages 5-9 in mind, but all ages are welcome.

This event is presented in collaboration with MIT Kids Press, an imprint of Candlewick Press, and the MIT Press Bookstore.

Cambridge Youth Gamelan celebrates their eighth concert season with a special featuring our dear friends - Putu Tangkas Adi Hiranmayena & Dewa Ayu Eka Putri - as well as our first joint performance with Gamelan Sleeping Fox, a Balinese youth gamelan ensemble from The Pike School (Andover, MA).

In this performance, Cambridge Youth Gamelan will perform the world premiere of a new Balinese lullaby, composed by Putu and Ayu, featuring vocals and live gamelan. We will also perform two versions of the dance classic, Topeng Keras, on both the gamelan gong kebyar and the gamelan angklung ensembles with featured dancer, Chiara Evans. In addition to these groups, both ensembles will perform Tari Gopala, Hujan Mas (older angklung version), and Bapang Selisir.

This concert is free and family friendly. Audience members will be invited to try out instruments and meet the musicians after the show. Please register for your tickets today!

Cambridge Youth Gamelan
Cambridge Youth Gamelan (Gamelan Anak Tika) teaches youth about traditional gamelan music and dance of Bali, Indonesia through hands-on learning experiences delivered by experienced instructors. Founded in 2016 by Mark Stewart and Emeric Viani, the ensemble is open to students in grades 2 - 12 regardless of prior musical experience. Over the years, the Cambridge Youth Gamelan has performed as special guests with Gamelan Galak Tika (MIT) and in performances at the Cambridge Public Library. The ensemble has also had the opportunity to work with notable Balinese artists such as Dewa Ketut Alit, Gusti Komin, Putu Tangkas Adi Hiranmayena, and Dewa Ayu Eka Putri.

This program is supported in part by a grant from Cambridge Arts, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Gamelan Sleeping Fox (The Pike School)Gamelan Sleeping Fox is an afterschool Balinese gamelan angklung for students in grades 3 - 8 at The Pike School in Andover, Massachusetts. The ensemble performs traditional repertoire for gamelan angklung as well as more modern angklung-kebyar repertoire. Founded by Emeric Viani in 2019, Gamelan Sleeping Fox has had the privilege of working with notable Balinese artists such as Gusti Komin, Putu Tangkas Adi Hiranmayena, and Dewa Ayu Eka Putri.

Putu Tangkas Adi Hiranmayena is an Indonesian artist-scholar serving as Assistant Professor of Music (Performance and Creativity) at Grinnell College, where he directs the Balinese Sound Ensemble and teaches courses on Heavy Metal Music, Electronic Music, and Noise and Activism. He also is a founding member of Balinese Experimental duo, ghOstMiSt, with dancer-anthropologist, Dewa Ayu Eka Putri; PAK Yeh (free-improvisation trio) from Denver, Colorado; and T.A.T.W.D. (improvised noise-metal trio) from Urbana, Illinois. Hiranmayena’s academic, performance, and compositional research focuses on the intersections of Cosmology, Indigeneity, Environmental Activism, and Performativity in Balinese Gamelan, Heavy Metal, and Noise. He takes post-colonial, performance studies, and creative ethnographic approaches to looking at the state of sound in the social sciences and humanities. His work constitutes equitable forms of knowledge production in the form of public-facing academic articles and Glocal creative artistic pieces.

Dewa Ayu Eka Putri is a Balinese artist-anthropologist and is currently a Lecturer of Dance at Grinnell College. She teaches courses on Balinese Dance and Performing Arts, specializing in traditional and contemporary dance styles. Putri also maintains her position as dance instructor at the critically acclaimed arts organization, Sanggar Cudamani, from Pengosekan, Bali, Indonesia. She received her B.A. from Universitas Udayana in cultural anthropology and is a leading figure in women’s gamelan ensembles all around Bali. Born into a family of artists, Dewa Ayu is internationally known for her collaborations of traditional and contemporary works in theater, music, and dance while actively working as a freelance research assistant. The majority of her work advocates for the legal protection of women and children which is highlighted in various discursive artistic modalities.

Dr. James Seaba, Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), believes pure carbon is a potential solution to our electricity generation demand. He will outline the challenges and some technical approaches to unlock carbon’s huge energy potential. He will also highlight the exciting economical aspects of using carbon.

About Dr. James Seaba

Dr. James Seaba currently serves as Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). His focus at ARPA-E is on domestic synthetic fuels and chemicals production, novel energy system designs, energy distribution and storage.

Dr. Seaba has spent over 30 years developing economically driven energy systems that minimize environmental impacts. He has spent most of his career in the oil and gas (O&G) sector, with some experience in automotive and aerospace. In O&G, he has successfully developed technologies for both upstream and downstream business units. Recently, Dr. Seaba has focused his efforts on domestic energy expansion in synthetic hydrocarbon fuels, developing price parity technologies to produce hydrocarbons compatible with U.S. infrastructure and end-use devices.

Dr. Seaba founded and led a U.S.-based research center in Ohio known as the Honda Research Institute (HRI). HRI developed cutting edge technology in microreactors, advanced hydrogen storage, and PEM fuel cell system development. At ConocoPhillips, Dr. Seaba developed fuel cell technologies, supported refining processes, hydrogen production, carbon capture, and novel low carbon processes for in-situ oil sands extraction. Dr. Seaba has leveraged internal research programs with U.S. National Laboratories and universities. He has developed technologies that minimize the environmental footprint for a variety of energy processes over the last 30 years. These processes cover a broad industry spectrum that includes the development of novel hydrogen production technology for refining to the reduction of carbon intensity in oil sands production. Dr. Seaba has successfully developed and executed technology strategies across multiple industries, consistently recognized for creative problem solving, leading successful cross-functional teams and establishing/executing value-added technology development programs. He has successfully commercialized technology from idea to practice. Dr. Seaba has over 30 U.S. patents and patent applications, and over 30 referred journal publications.

To tackle these challenges, the MIT Climate Project is launching a new Frontier on Super Pollutant Mitigation. The goal of the Frontier is to develop fundamentally new super pollutant solutions that, when implemented, will slow warming while providing benefits to human and ecosystem health.

To kick off this new effort, this summer we will be hosting a special seminar series on super pollutants. Each meeting will feature:

Two short presentations by MIT PIs carrying out research in this area, across a wide range of domains — science, engineering, social science, and implementation.Opportunities for members of the MIT community to learn about new super pollutant research and meet others interested in the topic.Discussions and connections to identify new opportunities for research and collaboration.

Seminars will be held from 12:00-1:00 pm on Tuesdays in June and July, in Building 55-110. Lunch will be served. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, June 16, and all members of the MIT community are invited to attend.

The Scolnick Prize is awarded annually by the McGovern Institute to recognize outstanding advances in the field of neuroscience. The prize is named in honor of Edward M. Scolnick, who stepped down as president of Merck Research Laboratories in December 2002 after holding Merck’s top research post for 17 years. Scolnick is now at the Broad Institute, where he established the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research. He also served as a member of the McGovern Institute’s scientific advisory board. The prize, which is endowed through a gift from Merck to the McGovern Institute, consists of a $225,000 award, plus an inscribed gift.

2026 Speaker: Liqun Luo, PhD

Talk Title: Wiring Specificity of Neural Circuits

Abstract:

Developing brains use a limited number of cell-surface proteins to instruct wiring specificity of a much larger number of neurons and synapses. How is this feat achieved? How do different cell-surface proteins work together to assemble a functional circuit? To address these questions, I will first describe our work using the fly olfactory circuit, focusing on a recent study in which we rewired the circuit by altering the combinatorial code of cell-surface proteins. I will then discuss functions of similar cell-surface proteins in instructing wiring specificity of neural circuits in the mouse brain.

Bio:

Liqun Luo grew up in Shanghai, China. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Science & Technology of China, PhD from Brandeis University, and postdoctoral training at UCSF. Since 1996, Dr. Luo has been on the faculty of Stanford, where he studies the assembly and function of neural circuits in fruit flies and mice. He has been teaching neurobiology to undergraduate and graduate students, from which he wrote the widely used textbook “Principles of Neurobiology”. Dr. Luo is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a recipient of the 2025 National Academy of Science Award in the Neurosciences.

Split into 8, 2-hour long sessions, the first half of each session will be spent learning new PTC Creo skills, while the second half will see the application of these new skills through in-class activities. In contrast to traditional mechanical design courses, this workshop places a greater emphasis on the design process itself, understanding how we can plan and best leverage our available tools to arrive to our desired result. Thus, the sessions are less about following the instructions on an engineering drawing, and more about independent thinking and strategizing, reverse engineering an object into a 3D model. This edition of “How to CAD Almost Anything” is themed around musical instruments, which means that all projects (20 total) will involve designing a variety of musical instruments!

MIT Tango Summer Class Series is open to participants of all levels. No matter what your dance or level of experience, these sessions will hone your balance, stability, posture, groundedness and more! No partner is needed.

Message from tango Maestra Fernanda Ghi about the series program:

Through many years of experience, I have come to understand that by developing a deeper knowledge of how to move our bodies—with strength, flexibility, and awareness—we can achieve a much more connected dance. We can access greater expression when we feel free in our body. And that freedom comes from knowledge. That is why this session will focus on exercises designed to help us connect with the different parts of the body we use when we dance.

We will work on balance, flexibility, stability, and strengthening key areas such as the center of the body, the glutes, the feet, and the back.

All of this will support a connected embrace, rather than a rigid one.

The second part of class will focus on applying this awareness through movement, using tango vocabulary. This is a direct and deep approach designed to offer you clear and tangible results.

I invite you to commit to working with us—to deepen your body awareness, to better understand how to use your body, and to become more expressive in your dance. ❤️

Why the Effects of Conscious Experience Differ from AI

Arguments based on Gödel’s incompleteness theorems demonstrate that our conscious understanding of mathematical truth is not simply computational. However, current AI is not based on precise mathematical systems, but on examining large bodies of data, to provide standpoints on various issues. It is argued that such procedures do not resemble the effects of human understanding, but are much more akin to the actions of the cerebellum which, despite having the majority of neurons in the brain, appear to be entirely unconscious, providing nothing directly relevant to human consciousness and understanding. Suggestions are made regarding relevant new physics.

Split into 8, 2-hour long sessions, the first half of each session will be spent learning new PTC Creo skills, while the second half will see the application of these new skills through in-class activities. In contrast to traditional mechanical design courses, this workshop places a greater emphasis on the design process itself, understanding how we can plan and best leverage our available tools to arrive to our desired result. Thus, the sessions are less about following the instructions on an engineering drawing, and more about independent thinking and strategizing, reverse engineering an object into a 3D model. This edition of “How to CAD Almost Anything” is themed around musical instruments, which means that all projects (20 total) will involve designing a variety of musical instruments!

View select artworks and consider how art and architecture have enhanced MIT's campus design, featuring artworks by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Alicja Kwade, and Cai Guo-Qiang.

Many of the public artworks seen on the tour is made possible by the MIT Percent-for-Art Program, administered by the List Visual Arts Center, that allocates a portion of the project funds to commission art for each new major renovation or campus construction project. The policy was formally instituted in 1968, but earlier collaborations between artists and architects can be found on MIT’s campus.

This program is free, but registration is required.

Through many years of experience, I have come to understand that by developing a deeper knowledge of how to move our bodies—with strength, flexibility, and awareness—we can achieve a much more connected dance. We can access greater expression when we feel free in our body. And that freedom comes from knowledge. That is why this session will focus on exercises designed to help us connect with the different parts of the body we use when we dance.

We will work on balance, flexibility, stability, and strengthening key areas such as the center of the body, the glutes, the feet, and the back.

All of this will support a connected embrace, rather than a rigid one.

The second part of class will focus on applying this awareness through movement, using tango vocabulary. This is a direct and deep approach designed to offer you clear and tangible results.

I invite you to commit to working with us—to deepen your body awareness, to better understand how to use your body, and to become more expressive in your dance. ❤️

To tackle these challenges, the MIT Climate Project is launching a new Frontier on Super Pollutant Mitigation. The goal of the Frontier is to develop fundamentally new super pollutant solutions that, when implemented, will slow warming while providing benefits to human and ecosystem health.

To kick off this new effort, this summer we will be hosting a special seminar series on super pollutants. Each meeting will feature:

Two short presentations by MIT PIs carrying out research in this area, across a wide range of domains — science, engineering, social science, and implementation.Opportunities for members of the MIT community to learn about new super pollutant research and meet others interested in the topic.Discussions and connections to identify new opportunities for research and collaboration.

Seminars will be held from 12:00-1:00 pm on Tuesdays in June and July, in Building 55-110. Lunch will be served. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, June 16, and all members of the MIT community are invited to attend.

MIT Tango Summer Class Series is open to participants of all levels. No matter what your dance or level of experience, these sessions will hone your balance, stability, posture, groundedness and more! No partner is needed.

Through many years of experience, I have come to understand that by developing a deeper knowledge of how to move our bodies—with strength, flexibility, and awareness—we can achieve a much more connected dance. We can access greater expression when we feel free in our body. And that freedom comes from knowledge. That is why this session will focus on exercises designed to help us connect with the different parts of the body we use when we dance.

We will work on balance, flexibility, stability, and strengthening key areas such as the center of the body, the glutes, the feet, and the back.

All of this will support a connected embrace, rather than a rigid one.

The second part of class will focus on applying this awareness through movement, using tango vocabulary. This is a direct and deep approach designed to offer you clear and tangible results.

I invite you to commit to working with us—to deepen your body awareness, to better understand how to use your body, and to become more expressive in your dance. ❤️

To tackle these challenges, the MIT Climate Project is launching a new Frontier on Super Pollutant Mitigation. The goal of the Frontier is to develop fundamentally new super pollutant solutions that, when implemented, will slow warming while providing benefits to human and ecosystem health.

To kick off this new effort, this summer we will be hosting a special seminar series on super pollutants. Each meeting will feature:

Two short presentations by MIT PIs carrying out research in this area, across a wide range of domains — science, engineering, social science, and implementation.Opportunities for members of the MIT community to learn about new super pollutant research and meet others interested in the topic.Discussions and connections to identify new opportunities for research and collaboration.

Seminars will be held from 12:00-1:00 pm on Tuesdays in June and July, in Building 55-110. Lunch will be served. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, June 16, and all members of the MIT community are invited to attend.

Split into 8, 2-hour long sessions, the first half of each session will be spent learning new PTC Creo skills, while the second half will see the application of these new skills through in-class activities. In contrast to traditional mechanical design courses, this workshop places a greater emphasis on the design process itself, understanding how we can plan and best leverage our available tools to arrive to our desired result. Thus, the sessions are less about following the instructions on an engineering drawing, and more about independent thinking and strategizing, reverse engineering an object into a 3D model. This edition of “How to CAD Almost Anything” is themed around musical instruments, which means that all projects (20 total) will involve designing a variety of musical instruments!

Talk Title: mPFC interneurons in spatial working memory function and dysfunction

Abstract: Working memory is a core cognitive ability that is disrupted in schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. In rodents, working memory of spatial locations relies on a circuit involving the prefrontal cortex and its inputs, including the hippocampus and thalamus. Function in this circuit is disrupted in mouse models of genetic predisposition to schizophrenia, resulting in deficits in spatial working memory. I will describe past work from our laboratory elucidating a causal pathway leading from a particular genetic susceptibility factor, the 22q11.2 microdeletion, through cellular, circuit, and system-level phenotypes to these behavioral deficits. I will also present recent and unpublished work implicating roles for specific interneuron subtypes in spatial working memory and its disruption by the microdeletion.

Bio: Joshua A. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D., is the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University. This is his second stint at Columbia, having been a member of the faculty from 2004 to 2016, where he conducted research, taught students and residents, and maintained a general psychiatry practice. Immediately prior to re-joining Columbia, Dr. Gordon served as the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) from 2016 until 2024, where he oversaw the principal US Government agency responsible for mental health research. Dr. Gordon received M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in neuroscience from the University of California, San Francisco, and completed a psychiatry residency and research fellowship at Columbia University prior to joining the faculty in 2004.

Dr. Gordon’s research employs an integrative systems approach towards understanding the neurobiology underlying working memory and its disruption by genes of relevance to schizophrenia. Utilizing a range of modern neuroscience techniques, including in vivo neurophysiology and optical and pharmacological circuit manipulation, his lab has demonstrated a crucial role for oscillatory neural dynamics in the long-range functional connectivity in the hippocampal-prefrontal circuit in rodents. Through studying mice carrying mutations that, in humans, confer risk for schizophrenia, he has developed and tested causal hypotheses for how genetic variants confer risk for disease. By disrupting these processes and then testing pharmacological and neuromodulatory approaches to reversing this disruption, his work has laid the groundwork for potential translation.

Dr. Gordon is a member of the National Academy of Medicine. His work has been recognized by several prestigious awards, including the NARSAD Young Investigator Award from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation; the Rising Star Award from the International Mental Health Research Organization; the A.E. Bennett Research Award from the Society of Biological Psychiatry, and the Daniel H. Efron Research Award from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology.

This workshop-style event introduces young children to the art of dance using patterns, movement, words, music, and storytelling.

Haitian Folkloric rhythms (played by Jean Appolon Expressions’ Master Drummers) and movements are woven into the class in a child-friendly fashion. Students will explore a social justice theme through age-appropriate literature, conversation, and movement. Past and future themes include kindness, acceptance, noticing and appreciating differences, identity, standing up against injustice, and love. This program is geared towards ages 3-10, but all are welcome!

Presented in collaboration with Jean Appolon Expressions, this class is co-taught by Artistic Director Jean Appolon (he/him/his) and Executive Director/Dancer Meghan McGrath (she/her/hers) and accompanied by Master Drummers Josil Rebert and Arnaud Lauture.

【Abstract】

The Heritage, Memory, and Identity pillar of MIT’s Global Humanities investigates how the legacies of the past continue to structure contemporary societies and future imaginaries. It views heritage not as a static collection of monuments, but as a dynamic process of meaning construction through which communities negotiate belonging, power, and identity. By engaging with the political, ethical, and creative dimensions of memory, the pillar seeks to illuminate how cultural legacies can both reproduce inequities and inspire new forms of resilience and repair. Our ongoing project demonstrates this approach. Relocating Agency amid Political Uncertainty and Exile brings Burmese visual artists that are dealing with exile and uncertainty into dialogue with MIT and international audiences through workshops, exhibitions, and publications that explore art as a form of soft power and political survival amid displacement and authoritarian repression. By reconnecting forgotten exchanges across regions and epochs, this initiative models how critical heritage studies can bridge past injustice with the ethical imagination of more equitable futures.
