Title: Fractions Are Hard! A Mathematical Overview of a Troublesome Topic

Abstract: The school curriculum is shaped by a fundamental tension: while much of mathematics is motivated by real-world intuition, the mathematics that emerges ultimately outgrows any single model that inspired it.

Fractions sit squarely in this tension, and it is never fully resolved in the curriculum. Students first meet fractions as commands—circle a third of the kittens—and then as concrete parts of a whole—a third of a pie. Fractions are not numbers per se until we place them on the number line and suggest that they are. Questions about multiplication and division then pull us back toward real-world thinking—“of means multiply,” portions of portions, and the area model—further blurring what a fraction seems to be.

Where do students land after all this on what a fraction is and why its arithmetic works? No wonder so many students reach high school and college mathematics disliking, or even hating, fractions. Let’s see if we can turn that around!

Title: Structure Theory of Parabolic Zero and Singular Sets

Abstract: I will discuss the structure theory of zero and singular sets of solutions to parabolic PDEs, drawing an analogy with the corresponding theory in the polynomial setting. As in the polynomial setting, their geometric and measure-theoretic structure is controlled by frequency, a quantity that plays the role of degree for polynomials. However, this analogy breaks down at the level of topology.

This talk is based in part on joint work with Max Hallgren and Zilu Ma, and on joint work with Javier Gómez-Serrano and Alexander Logunov.

Talk title: Changing Perspectives on Self Control

Abstract: Everyone has impulses they must control. But people vary dramatically in the self control they exhibit over thoughts and actions, and these variations from within the first few years of life predict important outcomes in health, wealth, education, and relationships. Why? According to dominant accounts, self control is vital for success in life, and executive functions that support such control show stable individual differences: If you have high executive function capacity as a child, you will have high executive function capacity as an adult, and this stability explains why early behaviors predict later outcomes. However, recent research from my lab and others challenges this view. People can possess the executive function capacity needed for self control, but adaptively decide whether or not to engage it based on whether the effort is likely to pay off. (Is a promised future reward worth resisting an immediate temptation for? Do people around me value self control? Is there an easier option?) These experiences accumulate to create habits that influence the effort required for engaging executive function, which shapes future decisions about whether to engage it. This framework provides an alternative understanding of why people vary in their self control, why these individual differences predict life outcomes, and how to identify effective targets for support and intervention.

Toward Accurate and Efficient Large-Eddy Simulation of Urban Canopy Flows

Abstract:

Computational fluid dynamics is increasingly being used to support the sustainable and resilient design of buildings and cities by predicting wind loading, natural ventilation, pedestrian wind comfort, and urban air quality. Large-eddy simulation (LES) has emerged as the most promising approach because it explicitly resolves the energetic turbulent motions that govern these processes. This presentation explores recent advances that are bringing LES closer to routine engineering practice.

A first step toward broader adoption of LES for urban and building design is demonstrating its predictive capability across different applications. For wind loading, validation studies have shown that a two-step LES methodology provides accurate predictions of peak pressures on buildings in realistic urban environments. For natural ventilation, coupled indoor-outdoor LES reproduces measured ventilation rates while capturing the strong influence of surrounding buildings on local flow patterns. These validation studies demonstrate that LES can accurately predict the governing flow physics.

The second challenge is reducing the computational cost of a design analysis, where tens to hundreds of simulations may be required to account for changing wind directions, atmospheric variability, and design alternatives. For wind loading, high-fidelity LES can be combined with lower-fidelity simulations through multi-fidelity machine learning frameworks, enabling accurate predictions across many wind directions while requiring only a limited number of expensive LES calculations. For applications such as urban airflow and natural ventilation, deep-learning surrogate models trained on LES databases can predict flow fields in seconds, providing orders-of-magnitude reductions in computational cost while maintaining the desired engineering accuracy. Together, these developments point toward a new generation of computational tools that combine physics-based simulation and machine learning to enable accurate and efficient prediction of complex turbulent flows.

Bio:

Catherine Gorlé is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. Her research focuses on developing predictive computational methods for turbulent flows to support the design of sustainable and resilient buildings and cities. Her group develops computational frameworks that combine large-eddy simulation, uncertainty quantification, multi-fidelity and multiscale modeling, and machine-learning techniques to improve both the accuracy and computational efficiency of simulation methods.

Catherine received her BSc (2002) and MSc (2005) degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the Delft University of Technology, and her PhD (2010) from the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics in cooperation with the University of Antwerp. She has been the recipient of a Stanford Center for Turbulence Research Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010), a Pegasus Marie Curie Fellowship (2012), and an NSF CAREER award (2018).

Sara Zewde is founding principal of Studio Zewde, a design firm practicing landscape architecture, urbanism, and public art. Named to TIME Magazine’s TIME100 Next, Architectural Digest’s AD100, and a United States Artists Fellow, her work is celebrated for design methods that sync culture, ecology, and craft. In parallel with practice, Sara serves as Associate Professor of Practice at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard University, a Master of City Planning from MIT, and a BA in Sociology and Statistics from Boston University. She is also currently writing a book on Frederick Law Olmsted’s travels through the Slave South, to be published by Simon & Schuster in 2027.

Najha Zigbi-Johnson is a writer, educator, and cultural organizer. Her Harlem-based practice explores the intersections of contemporary Black art, the built environment, and social movements. She is the editor of Mapping Malcolm, a transdisciplinary publication that brings together artists, community organizers, and scholars to consider the politics of Black space-making in Harlem and across the diasporic world. Najha is a graduate of Guilford College and Harvard Divinity School, and was subsequently a Research Fellow at the Graduate School of Architecture Preservation and Planning at Columbia University.

Currently, Najha’s work explores how Black political movements give way to cultural production and institution building. This ongoing inquiry is shaped by her roles lecturing in architecture and political science at the City College of New York, as well as her curatorial work and writing practice. Najha’s work has been published in New York Magazine, Artforum, SEEN Journal, Essence, White Cube Gallery and more.

This lecture will be held in person in the Sidara Auditorium (W41- 1216) and streamed online on YouTube.

Title: Robust Learning with Optimal Error

Abstract: We construct algorithms with optimal error for learning with
adversarial noise. The overarching theme of this work is that
the use of randomized hypotheses can substantially improve
upon the best error rates achievable with deterministic
hypotheses.

For η-rate malicious noise, we show the optimal error is 1/2 ·
η/(1 − η), improving on the optimal error of deterministic
hypotheses by a factor of 1/2. This answers an open question
of Cesa-Bianchi et al. (JACM 1999) who showed randomness
can improve error by a factor of 6/7.

For η-rate nasty noise, we show the optimal error is 3/2 · η
for distribution-independent learners and η for fixeddistribution learners, both improving upon the optimal 2η
error of deterministic hypotheses. This closes a gap first
noted by Bshouty et al. (Theoretical Computer Science 2002)
when they introduced nasty noise and reiterated in the
recent works of Klivans et al. (NeurIPS 2025) and Blanc et al.
(SODA 2026).

For η-rate agnostic noise and the closely related nasty
classification noise model, we show the optimal error is η,
improving upon the optimal 2η error of deterministic
hypotheses.

All of our learners have sample complexity linear in the VCdimension of the concept class and polynomial in the inverse
excess error. All except for the fixed-distribution nasty noise
learner are time efficient given access to an oracle for
empirical risk minimization.

Moitra. Prior to that, he received his PhD in theoretical
computer science at Stanford advised by Li-Yang Tan.

Electrification aims to change the way energy is supplied and used in chemical and manufacturing processes. Electrifying process heat is especially important because heating accounts for a large share of industrial energy use and emissions. At the level of individual units, electric technologies can operate more efficiently, start up much faster, and offer better control than conventional fired equipment. These features enable new opportunities for process integration and more flexible plant operation. Beyond the plant, electrification also affects the power grid. As more industrial processes rely on electricity, their operating patterns influence overall electricity demand and its variability. This presentation reviews recent results that probe these effects. We quantify efficiency gains at the unit level, introduce new processing architectures with fast startup /shut down cycles, discuss the impact of electrification on heat integration at the plant level, and study new electricity market mechanisms such as demand bidding at the grid scale. Together, these results provide a clearer picture of how process electrification performs in practice, and what challenges lie ahead for broad adoption.

Michael Baldea is the Claire and Peter Buenz Endowed Chair and Kenneth A. Kobe Professor in the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, and the ExxonMobil Visiting Chair Professor at the National University of Singapore. He serves as Chief Technology Officer for EPIXC, a DOE Manufacturing Institute focused on process electrification and is the Editor in Chief of Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research. He obtained his Diploma and M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from "Babes-Bolyai" University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining The University of Texas, he led industrial research at the Praxair (now Linde) Technology Center in Tonawanda, NY. His research interests include the dynamics, optimization and control of process and energy systems, areas in which he has published three books and over 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference articles. He is the recipient, among others, of the AIChE Institute Award for Excellence in Industrial Gases Technology, the NSF CAREER award, and the Model-Based Innovation Prize from Siemens Process Systems Enterprise.

Woodcutters Synopsis

Vienna, circa 1984.

A writer returns from self-imposed exile only to learn of the death of an old friend whose funeral reunites a clique of aging avant-garde artists. At the “artistic dinner” following the funeral, the writer lurks at the perimeter of the room, taking stock of the vulgarity, pomposity, and hypocrisy of the people in whom he had once invested his youthful desire and ambition. Laden with both grief and guilt, the writer condemns the culture industry to which his friend was sacrificed, implicating not only himself but everyone else in her death. Bernhard’s text prompts us to ask: What happens to artistic commitments wrongly cultivated? Who suffers as a result? Marcos Troyjo, PhD, is the Robert E. Wilhelm Fellow at the MIT Center for International Studies. He is an economist, political scientist, and diplomat. He served as Brazil’s deputy economy minister and special secretary for foreign trade and international affairs and was a leading negotiator of the European Union–Mercosur Agreement. He later became president of the New Development Bank, the first Westerner to lead an Asia-headquartered multilateral organization. He is a global adviser to the European Investment Bank and serves on the boards of Inditex, Minerva Foods, União Química, Bosch, Global Neighbours, and the UN Foundation. At Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, he co-founded the BRICLab, taught international affairs and political economy, and completed postdoctoral studies. He holds an MA and PhD in international relations from the University of São Paulo.

Title: Regularity of invariant measures for random dynamical systems

Abstract: Suppose that a probability measure on a compact manifold 𝑀 is invariant under a collection of diffeomorphisms of 𝑀. I will explain some criteria on the measure and diffeomorphisms which ensure that the measure is a smooth volume form on 𝑀. The assumptions say, informally, that the measure is of Lebesgue class when conditioned along a random collection of (measurable) foliations by submanifolds.

The results, joint with Brown, Eskin, and Rodriguez Hertz, are applicable to measures for which we can deduce additional rigidity properties (joint with the same authors). I will explain the necessary background and motivation from dynamics.

Title: Measure and topological rigidity beyond homogeneous dynamics

Abstract: To study the asymptotic behavior of orbits of a dynamical system, one can look at orbit closures or invariant measures. When the underlying system has a homogeneous structure, usually coming from a Lie group, with appropriate assumptions a wide range of rigidity theorems show that ergodic invariant measures and orbit closures have to be well-behaved and can often be classified.

I will describe joint work with Brown, Eskin, and Rodriguez Hertz, which establishes rigidity results for quite general dynamical systems with some hyperbolicity. I will discuss in detail a case with rich geometric structures, namely that of the action of the mapping class group and its subgroups on the character variety of a compact Lie group. Orbit closures in this case are related to the geometry of families of Riemann surfaces.

Summary: This seminar will give an overview of an in-process book manuscript, The Dynamics of Power Politics (with Paul MacDonald and Daniel Nexon), which develops a relational-network approach to power political mobilization. Much of international relations theories assume that states have access to “stocks” of power, that military, economic, and diplomatic tools are readily available and ready to deploy in power-political competition. Professor Goddard will discuss how scholars should orient their analysis of great power competition around processes of collective mobilization and demobilization, with the goal of identifying the strategies of mobilization that replicate across time and space.

Dr. Betsy Barre, Assistant Provost and Executive Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching at Wake Forest University

Description

In a recent Substack post, the cognitive psychologist Daniel Willingham argued that there seems to be widespread agreement about the problem LLMs pose for education. Most educators recognize that “learning is a product of engaging in mental work,” that “students may use AI to replace that mental work,” and that if they do so, they are unlikely to learn.

In September’s TLL Speaker Series Presentation, Dr. Betsy Barre, Assistant Provost and Executive Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching at Wake Forest University, will help us think about how to confront this now familiar challenge. Drawing on recent research and TLL data about MIT students, Dr. Barre will explore the way time pressures, performance-oriented goals, and inexperience with challenging academic tasks can each lead students to lean too heavily on artificial intelligence to complete their out-of-class work. She will then offer practical strategies to help instructors address the threat posed by AI to student learning. Participants will leave with concrete, evidence-based approaches to make challenging work both accessible and compelling, and a framework for designing out-of-class learning experiences that reward depth over efficiency.

About the Speaker

Betsy Barre is Assistant Provost and Executive Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching at Wake Forest University, where she's led faculty development since 2018. A nationally recognized voice in higher education, she's been featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education and on NPR, and she co-developed the widely used Course Workload Estimator. Trained as a comparative ethicist, she also holds an affiliate faculty appointment in the Department for the Study of Religion.

Title: Line shellings of geometric lattices

Abstract: Inspired by Bruggesser and Mani’s line shellings of polytopes, we introduce line shellings for the lattice of flats of a matroid: given any nested set complex of a matroid, we show that every lexicographic ordering of the vertices of the corresponding normal complex induces a shelling order. This gives a new proof of Björner’s classical result that the order complex of the lattice of flats of a matroid is shellable, and demonstrates shellability for all nested set complexes of matroids. This talk is based on joint work with Spencer Backman, Galen Dorpalen-Barry, Anastasia Nathanson and Noah Prime.

Title: Filtrations on Harish-Chandra modules

Abstract: The algebra of functions on an affine algebraic variety is infinite-dimensional; but it is has (not canonically!) an increasing filtration by finite-dimensional subspaces. The growth of the dimensions of those subspaces is a polynomial of degree the dimension of the variety. Much more information about the variety can be captured by trying to pin down the filtration.

The same words apply to (finite length) representations of real and p-adic reductive groups; theu degree of the polynomial is the "Gelfand-Kirillov dimension" of the representation. For real groups, Wilfried Schmid and Kari Vilonen have shown how to find a canonical increasing filtration. and so a canonical polynomial. I'll discuss some known and conjectural properties of their filtration and the corresponding polynomials, with the hope of encouraging someone to produce similar results for p-adic groups.

Title: Symplectophagy

Abstract: A symplectophagy is a symplectic isotopy satisfying certain constraints reminiscent of the symplectic camel problem. In this talk, I will introduce this notion and basic examples, and present a new phenomenon of symplectic rigidity in the form of obstructions to the existence of symplectophagies in certain situations. To establish these obstructions, we adapt structural arguments from algebraic topology using relative symplectic cohomology, introduced by Varolgunes, and its extension to pairs (joint with Ganor, Polterovich, and Zapolsky), leveraging recent computations of this cohomology with Ganor. By extracting capacity-like information from the torsion, we utilize this algebraic framework to derive the obstructions.

This talk is based on work in progress with Ganor and Zapolsky.

About the Speaker

Christian Frederickson is a violist, composer, and sound designer based who specializes in live music performance for theater and dance. Originally from Port Townsend, WA, he also lived in Louisville, New York City, and is now based in Boston, where he lives with his wife and two sons and teaches at MIT.

He was a founding member and one of the principal songwriters (along with Jason Noble and Rachel Grimes) of the Louisville, KY-based instrumental band Rachel's, who released 6 albums on Quarterstick Records between 1995 and 2003. The 2016 re-issue of 'systems/layers', the final Rachel's album, garnered a "Best New Reissue" on Pitchfork and was called "a truly synthesized mesh of chamber music and electronics that sounded like little else…a godfather record to the nascent (post-classical) genre…" A core ensemble of viola, cello, piano, guitar/bass, drums, and percussion was surrounded by many other orchestral instruments, tape manipulation, cinematic sound design, found sounds and electronic elements in their studio albums. Rachel's toured widely in North America and Europe, and played a concert performance of their album 'Music For Egon Schiele' in Seoul, South Korea. Music by Rachel's has been used in countless films, theater, and dance performances, the most well-known of which include the 2014 Oscar-winning foreign film 'The Great Beauty', 'Hancock' directed by Peter Berg, 'Any Given Sunday' directed by Oliver Stone, and both of the Gasland films, directed by Josh Fox. Rachel's also performed on the BBC, NPR's "Weekend Edition Sunday", WNYC's "New Sounds" including a special live performance at Merkin Hall in New York in 2005, as well as the national radio networks in Belgium, Italy, and South Korea.

As a solo artist, Frederickson has released seven albums since 2011: The Painted Bird | Bastard, The Painted Bird | Amidst and Custodians of Beauty are scores for contemporary dance created for Pavel Zustiak and Palissimo Co. Death Metal Angola was written for a documentary film by Jeremy Xido about the rock music scene in Angola. Teratogeny, The Starving Season, and Islands of Light are collections of music from various film, dance, and theater projects. In 2010 he formed a group called The Young Scamels with Jason Noble and Greg King of Rachel's. Their album "Tempest" was the score for a production of the Shakespeare play at Actors Theatre of Louisville. He has also played concerts of his own music in New York City, Seattle, Louisville, and Nashville in the past year. As a guest artist he has recorded viola with Rodan, Shipping News, Seluah, Rachel Grimes, Rivulets, Mission of Burma, The For Carnation, Per Mission, Samara Lubelski, and Shannon Wright.

After to New York in 2004, Frederickson worked primarily in theater and dance, continuing collaborations with Anne Bogart's SITI Co. which began with the Rachel's/SITI theater collaboration 'systems/layers' and continued as he wrote and performed music for Antigone, Trojan Women, Hanjo, and designed sound for Steel Hammer, a production featuring the Bang on a Can All-Stars performing the music of Julia Wolfe. He is a perennial guest artist at the SITI Company's annual training intensive at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. Frederickson also has a long-standing collaboration with the choreographer and director Pavel Zuštiak and his Palissimo Company, creating and performing music for six evening-length pieces since 2010. He has worked at a long list of theaters in New York City, notably the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Classic Stage Company, The Public Theater, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Atlantic Stage 2, as well as regional theaters, primarily Actor's Theatre of Louisville where he has worked on over 20 productions and was a regular designer at the Humana Festival of New American Plays.

Frederickson was trained as a classical musician, and holds a Bachelor's degree in performance from The Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and a Master's degree from The Juilliard School. His principal viola teachers were Paul Coletti and Eugene Becker. From 2000 to 2004 he was the viola instructor at the University of Louisville, also teaching chamber music and orchestral playing. He performed four seasons as a member of the Louisville String Quartet, as well as with the Kentucky Center Chamber Players, the Louisville Bach Society, and other chamber music ensembles.

Title: Efficient deletion of data from trained AI models

Abstract: How does the choice of training data influence an
AI model? This question is of central importance to
interpretability, privacy, data attribution, and basic
science. At its core is the data deletion problem:
after a reasonable amount of precomputation,
quickly predict how the model would behave if a
given subset of training data had been deleted.
I will present a data deletion scheme capable of
predicting model outputs to arbitrary precision. A
bound on the error can be derived from a simple
assumption about the stability of the AI model. In
contrast to the assumptions made by prior work,
ours appears to be fully compatible with deep
learning. We believe that this method opens up a
range of new possibilities for theory in AI. For
instance, it gives the first ‘machine unlearning’
scheme with provable security in the deep learning
setting.

advised by Umesh Vazirani for his PhD at UC

Talk title: The Connectome in Use: From anatomical wiring to functional organization in the behaving C. elegans brain

Abstract: A connectome is a map of possible interactions , not a record of how those possibilities are used by a behaving nervous system. Synaptic efficacy, electrical coupling, neuromodulation, and internal state continually reshape which anatomical pathways contribute to ongoing activity. The same wiring diagram can therefore support different dynamical regimes, while similar population dynamics can arise through different circuit routes. The central challenge is to understand how anatomical connectivity is expressed as functional organization.

C. elegans makes it possible to examine this problem across an entire nervous system at cellular resolution. Its neurons can be identified across animals, multiple layers of its connectome have been mapped, and brain-wide activity can be recorded during natural behavior. Using recordings from more than 150 freely moving animals, we train cross-animal models to predict each neuron’s activity from the rest of the population and derive cell-class-resolved maps of conditional functional dependence. We use these maps to ask which relationships generalize across individuals, how shared low-dimensional brain states contribute to apparent interactions, and where the remaining structure aligns with chemical synapses, gap junctions, and peptidergic signaling. These maps provide a quantitative description of the functional organization reproducibly expressed in whole-brain activity—and of the selective and imperfect imprint of anatomy upon it.

This work establishes a baseline against which perturbations can be read: activation and silencing of identified neurons, manipulation of neuromodulatory systems, and mutations in conserved autism-associated synaptic genes can each be used to test how defined changes to circuit components reorganize brain-wide functional dependencies and behavior.

A Red Sea Pan-Culture from Almaqah to Allah: Pagan Temples, Christian Churches, and the Great Mosque of Sana’a

Bio

Valentina is Assistant Professor of Medieval History at Bard College. She previously taught at The Catholic University of America in the Department of Semitic and Egyptian Languages and Literatures and at New York University’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World. She was also an affiliate member of the European Research Council (ERC) project “The Qur’an as a Source for Late Antiquity”, and participated in archaeological projects in Iraqi Kurdistan, Sicily, Ethiopia, and Jordan.Her doctoral dissertation at the University of Cambridge was published as a monograph, Pre-Islamic Arabia: Societies, Politics, Cults, and Identities during Late Antiquity (Cambridge University Press, 2023). Her work on the Red Sea, Central Asia and Sicily in the ancient and medieval period has been featured in The Journal of Near Eastern Studies, The Journal of Late Antiquity, Millennium, The Journal of Ancient Near Eastern History and The Journal of Medieval Religious Cultures among others. She is currently editing Moving (Indian) Images in the First Millennium: papers from “Indian Ocean Figures that Sailed Away” an ISAW workshop series, spring 2022(Brepols) and finishing her second monograph on a Red Sea pan-culture encompassing aesthetic and religious practices.

Abstract

The emergence of Islam in South Arabia called for new communal gathering spaces. Instead of seeking fresh quarries, the masons salvaged columns from the ruined Church of Abraha—a sixth-century cathedral constructed specifically to rival Mecca—and integrated them into the structure of what would later become the Great Mosque of Sana’a. Excavations at Beta Samati in Ethiopia confirm a similar palimpsest two centuries earlier, during the spread of Christianity in the Horn of Africa. There, Christian basilicas adapted pagan predecessors, thereby re-adapting ancient carving techniques, plans, and motifs traceable to South Arabia. This presentation is structured in two parts. The first examines the historical context of late antique South Arabia: early contacts with the Horn of Africa, the emergence of a unified political entity under Himyar, the Aksumite conquest at the time of the so-called Massacre of Najran, and, eventually, Caliphal rule. The second part turns to the region’s visual culture and religious architecture, ranging from pagan temples and synagogues to churches and mosques. Drawing on my forthcoming monograph on cross-cultural interaction across the Red Sea, I argue for the existence of a Red Sea pan-culture encompassing both aesthetic and religious practices, demonstrating that the rise of Islam did not abruptly terminate South Arabia’s ancient aesthetic traditions. In the Great Mosque of Sana’a, for instance, the reuse of pre-Islamic structural and decorative elements and masonry techniques points to a desire to amalgamate rather than erase the past. Moreover, the plans of some early mosques bear a striking resemblance to ancient South Arabian pagan temples, such as the temple of Sirwah, dedicated to Almaqah.

Title: A New Math Sequence for First Year Engineering Students at the University of Michigan

Abstract: After the College of Engineering completed a self-study about math preparation for their programs, our Math Department was invited to create two new courses that are expected to become the core for all first year engineering students. The first is a linear algebra course and the second a condensed calculus course that combines ideas from our current Calc I–Calc II sequence, emphasizes a “numerical” perspective (as opposed to analytic), incorporates more modern engineering applications, and recognizes that over 95% of Michigan engineering students have prior exposure to calculus from high school. After a full year of discussions and development, the sequence will debut in pilot form this fall. This talk will discuss the factors leading to this sequence of events and how we have begun this reform in collaboration with Engineering.

Summary: Extended nuclear deterrence has been a core feature of U.S. grand strategy throughout the nuclear age. However, shifting U.S. commitments, a changing balance of power, and potential new patrons of extended nuclear deterrence are raising the question of how extended nuclear deterrence operates in more general terms, beyond the U.S. case. We identify a trilemma that exists when states offer extended nuclear deterrence. States cannot simultaneously prioritize three policy goals: credible deterrence; a nuclear arsenal oriented toward crisis stability; and nonproliferation. The choice to prioritize any two of these goals requires deprioritizing the third. We show that the constraints of the trilemma drove U.S. policy choices during the Cold War and sheds light on the China-North Korea relationship and ongoing policy debates regarding potential “post-American” options for European extended nuclear deterrence.

This lecture explores a pivotal shift in the relationship between technology and the performing arts—from chasing novelty to cultivating mastery. Violinist, composer, and technologist Mari Kimura presents MUGIC® (Music/User Gesture Interface Control), a groundbreaking motion sensor designed to deepen, not replace, musicianship. Unlike many fleeting tech innovations, MUGIC® is a lightweight, wearable device that captures expressive gestures in real time, converting them into control data for sound, visuals, and interactive media. Designed with performers in mind, it emphasizes expressivity, accessibility, and longevity—offering a sustainable model for integrating technology into the arts, education, and therapeutic practices. Drawing from over a decade of development and real-world application—from interdisciplinary curricula to stages such as Lincoln Center, the Venice Biennale, and Expo 2025 Osaka—Kimura showcases how mastering a robust, intuitive tool fosters deeper expression and long-term artistic growth.

Speaker Bio:

Mari Kimura is a visionary violinist, composer, technologist, and entrepreneur whose pioneering work bridges performance, innovation, and education. A recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Fromm Commission from Harvard, and a residency at IRCAM in Paris, she was awarded the 2025 SEAMUS Award for lifetime achievement in electroacoustic music. The Carnegie Corporation recognized her as an “Immigrant: Pride of America.”

Internationally acclaimed for inventing the subharmonics technique, enabling violinists to play an octave below the instrument’s natural range, she was hailed by The New York Times as a “virtuoso playing at the edge.” Her music, integrating contemporary composition with motion-sensor technology, has been commissioned by ensembles such as the Cassatt String Quartet, Harvard New Music Ensemble and others. An active performer and improviser, she has premiered works by John Adams, Luciano Berio, and Tania León, and collaborated with artists such as Jim O’Rourke, Henry Kaiser and Elliott Sharp. A longtime collaborator on the ERC project involving SOMAX — an AI-improvisation engine developed at IRCAM — she regularly performs at IRCAM's ImproTech festivals.

Kimura joined UC Irvine’s ICIT program as a Professor of Music in 2017 and retired in June 2026, when she was named Professor Emeritus. She continues to teach as a graduate faculty at Juilliard since 1998. In 2020, she launched MUGIC® (Music/User Gesture Interface Control), a compact motion sensor that transforms physical gestures into data for controlling music, visuals, and beyond. MUGIC® is now used in major venues—including Lincoln Center, the Venice Biennale, and Osaka Expo 2025—and at leading institutions such as Harvard, Juilliard, and Berlin’s University of the Arts (UdK).

What is duende? Poet Federico García Lorca described it as a raw, embodied creative force that overtakes a performer — not skill, not style, but an expressive drive that arrives only through vulnerability and risk. This 2-hour event explores that question first through ideas, then through the body.

Cultural anthropologist and pianist Alfredo Minetti opens with a short talk on why genuine artistic risk has become so rare in performance today. Drawing on Lorca, Guy Debord's Society of the Spectacle, and Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death, he traces how consumer culture and entertainment saturation have pushed the performing arts toward spectacle and surface polish, sidelining the vulnerability that makes performance feel alive. Using classical concert music as a case study — including pianist Glenn Gould's defiant breaks from convention — Minetti makes the case for reclaiming performance as something lived and risked, not simply produced and consumed.

Minetti and choreographer Fernanda Ghi then engage in a conversation on these ideas, bringing together their perspectives as musician and dancer before moving into direct physical experience.

Ghi leads participants into that embodied exploration: Is duende an energy? An emotion? A force that wakes the most authentic, creative self? Through guided breathing, free movement, and improvisation — both solo and with a partner — participants will explore what happens when the body moves beyond learned technique and habit. The practice invites letting go, releasing control, quieting the analytical mind, and simply being present — creating the conditions for duende to emerge.

This is not a class in choreography or performance technique. It's an embodied investigation into creativity, presence, and authentic expression — for anyone curious why a performance can feel hollow even when flawlessly executed, and what it takes to bring the danger and depth back. No dance or musical experience required.

Drawing from his book Making the Liberal Media: How Conservatives Built a Movement Against the Press (Columbia, 2026), A.J. Bauer tracks the rightward shift of structural media criticism in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He contends that bias discourse—attempts to theoretically or empirically prove or disprove media bias—relies on an unwarranted faith in exposure. Bias claims assert that political disagreement is fundamentally an epistemological problem—that if only people had “the facts” they would see the world, and share the political interests, of the claimant.

While the idea of “liberal media” bias has played a central role in modern conservative movement strategy and identity formation, progressive and journalistic attempts to respond have too often failed by accepting the claim’s core premise. What would it look like to reject bias discourse outright? Instead of endlessly debating the ideological and normative slants of various media, what if we saw bias for what it is—an acknowledgment of ideological disagreement, and an invitation into a distinct practice of worldbuilding.

A.J. Bauer is an assistant professor of journalism at the University of Alabama. He holds a PhD in American Studies from New York University. He is co-editor of News on the Right: Studying Conservative News Cultures (Oxford, 2019) and the author of Making the Liberal Media: How Conservatives Built a Movement Against the Press (Columbia, 2026).

Abstract: I will discuss my lab’s recent work on understanding the interacting roles of synaptic organization, nonlinear dendritic processing, and neuronal activity patterns in the mammalian neocortex as they pertain to computational power, flexibility, and learning in the adult mammalian neocortex.

Bio: Mark joined the faculty at MIT in 2015 and was tenured in 2023. He became Graduate Officer in 2021. He received his B.A. in Biology from Reed College in Portland, Oregon and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining MIT, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn VA.

Abstract:

Hardware can help solve challenging security problems from secure key storage to real-time monitoring of attacks to shrinking the Trusted Computing Base (TCB). Of course, hardware vulnerabilities can also cause software systems to fail. In this talk, we focus on the synergies between hardware and cryptography, and first describe recent research in using hardware acceleration to speed up cryptography and enable the design of more efficient cryptographic protocols. We explore how cryptography helps to secure hardware systems and whether new security definitions can help with the design of secure hardware.

Bio:

Srini Devadas is the Webster Professor of EECS at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has been on the faculty since 1988. Devadas's current research interests are in computer architecture, computer security, and applied cryptography. In 2021, he received the IEEE Cybersecurity Award for Practice, and the ACM SIGSAC Award for
Outstanding Innovation for his work on secure hardware.

During times of difficulty pushing for federal action, states serve as an important powerhouse for policy leadership, sandboxing, and resistance. In this workshop, we will engage in 3 Massachusetts campaigns taking action against unsafe, unregulated, and undemocratic AI:

Policy leadership – Massachusetts is now pioneering legislation with the strongest AI regulation language in the country (Amendment 471). This campaign aims to pass the amendment. Resistance against undemocratic AI adoption – In February 2026, Gov. Maura Healey made Massachusetts the first state to roll out ChatGPT across the entire executive branch, with citizens getting no say. This campaign aims to demand transparency and citizen oversight. Resistance against pre-emption – Massachusetts Rep. Lori Trahan drafted a bill that would preempt state AI laws for three years. This campaign aims to get Trahan to drop the bill.

Join us in person on Friday, September 25th for a half day symposium by the Aging Brain Initiative at MIT, this year titled “Innovation for the Aging Brain”. This year, we bring together MIT faculty whose cutting-edge technologies are fundamentally transforming how we model, measure, and intervene in neurobiology and brain aging. Speakers will showcase innovations spanning molecular imaging platforms that illuminate neural circuit activity; brain-wave dynamics underlying cognition and memory; chemical tools for precisely targeting and modulating aging-associated molecular pathways; bioengineered models of the neuro-muscular junction to study ALS; and the first AI foundation model built to make Alzheimer's preventable. Attendees will gain insight into how engineering, chemistry and neuroscience converge to address critical challenges in age-related neurodegeneration and Alzheimer's prevention.

Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director, United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

Anacláudia Rossbach is the Executive Director of UN-Habitat and an economist with over 20 years of experience in housing, informal settlements, and urban policies. She was appointed Executive Director of UN-Habitat at the Under-Secretary-General level by the General Assembly, following nomination by the UN Secretary-General on June 7, 2024. Prior to this role, she was the Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and served as Regional Manager for Cities Alliance, where she founded the Urban Housing Practitioners Hub. Prior to that, with the World Bank, she oversaw the development and implementation of Brazilian housing and slum-upgrading policies. Ms. Rossbach has actively contributed to global urban policy discussions and has a strong academic presence in the field. She took office on August 12, 2024.

Title: Polynomial bounds for eigenfunctions and eigenvalues on random covers of hyperbolic surfaces

Abstract: Let 𝑋 be a compact connected orientable hyperbolic surface and let 𝑋𝑛 be a
degree 𝑛 random cover. We show that, with high probability, the 𝐿∞ norm of
every Laplace eigenfunction on 𝑋𝑛 with bounded eigenvalue decays polyno-
mially in 𝑛. Using similar methods, we also show that, with high probability,
the distribution of eigenvalues of the Laplacian on 𝑋𝑛 converges to the spec-
tral measure of the hyperbolic plane with polynomially decaying error. Our
proof relies on the Selberg pre-trace formula and a variant of the polynomial
method

Title: Higher-Categorical Associahedra

Abstract: In 2017, Bottman introduced a family of posets called 2-associahedra as a tool for investigating functoriality properties of Fukaya categories, and he conjectured that they could be realized as face posets of convex polytopes. We introduce a family of posets called \emph{categorical $n$-associahedra}, which naturally extend Bottman's 2-associahedra and the classical associahedra. Categorical $n$-associahedra give a combinatorial model for the poset of strata of a compactified real moduli space of a tree arrangement of affine coordinate subspaces. We construct a family of complete polyhedral fans, called velocity fans, whose coordinates encode the relative velocities of pairs of colliding coordinate subspaces, and whose face posets are the categorical $n$-associahedra. In particular, this gives the first fan realization of 2-associahedra. In the case of the classical associahedron, the velocity fan specializes to the normal fan of Loday's realization of the associahedron. Time permitting, we will discuss current investigations of projectivity for velocity fans. This is joint work with Nathaniel Bottman and Daria Poliakova.

The jam_bot project has been developed over the past three years in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab during Rudess’s Center for Art, Science & Technology Distinguished Visiting Artist residency at MIT. These concerts are a rare opportunity to experience the next chapter of this research project and witness Rudess interact with an advanced real-time system that enables the use of generative AI models in live music performances.

Moving from Baroque counterpoint to progressive rock and beyond, the program will be built around live improvisation. jam_bot is able to listen and respond to Rudess in real time, while also generating musical material that can be performed by other musicians onstage, opening the door to new forms of collaborative improvisation.

The Yamaha Disklavier pianos featured in the performances are provided by Falcetti Pianos in Newton, Massachusetts.

Title: High tech and no tech: intention and pedagogy in a modeling-based calculus course

Abstract: I will introduce the structure and pedagogy of a new math course at UC Santa Cruz: a modeling-based course in mathematics for the life sciences. Adapted from LS30 at UCLA, the UCSC course uses the dynamics of biological systems as a foundation for teaching relevant concepts from calculus, dynamics, and linear algebra. After a broad introduction to the content and structure of the course, I’ll discuss a pedagogical approach which guides our active learning discussion sections. Some are deliberately high-tech, with custom simulators of dynamical systems. Others are deliberately no-tech, with pen on paper, and chalk on the blackboard. From what we have learned over the past two years, I’ll reflect on what seems to work best for student learning and for the development of our teaching team.

Title: the 4 dimensional Anderson model

Abstract: We establish Gaussian scaling limit, for the (elliptic) Anderson model in 4 dimensions, with small coupling constant. This is a simplest example of a critical model in SPDEs, a theme which has been a major challenge of the field. Our theorem provides the first example where infinitely many renormalization constants are present and controlled.

Talk title: Building a Brain, One Cell at a Time: Reading the Developmental Instructions Behind Human Neural Diversity

Abstract: The human brain assembles itself over many months of prenatal development, generating thousands of distinct types of nerve cells that must be produced in the right numbers, at the right times, and wired into the right circuits—a process that, when disrupted, underlies many psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. My laboratory studies the “instruction manual” behind this feat by asking a deceptively simple question: which cells give rise to which, and when? To answer it, we tag individual neural stem cells with unique genetic “barcodes”—inherited by all of a cell’s descendants—and then use single-cell sequencing to reconstruct family trees of brain cells at massive scale, tracing hundreds of thousands of cells back to their origins in both mouse and human tissue. This approach has let us map where the brain’s two great classes of neurons (the excitatory cells that drive activity and the inhibitory cells that restrain it) come from, revealing surprises about how the human cortex expands relative to other species and how certain neurons continue to be born far later in development than textbooks predict. By extending the same barcoding logic to a modified rabies virus that jumps between connected neurons, we can now also chart the earliest wiring diagrams of the developing human brain, including fleeting circuits that exist only transiently before birth. Together, this work aims to turn brain development from a black box into a legible, quantitative program—one whose logic may ultimately explain how small genetic changes tip development toward disease.

Talk Title: Contrastive self-supervised learning in high-level visual cortex

Abstract:
Self-supervised learning theory (SSL) proposes learning powerful representations directly from the visual input without external supervision, only using internally generated supervisory signals. However, we lack direct neural evidence for SSL induced visual plasticity and on the nature of internal supervision in the brain. Here, we show that primate high-level visual cortex can switch the direction of learning in individual neurons, matching the two opposing operations invoked in contrastive SSL. Inputs were pushed together in neural responses when closely presented during fixation viewing (invariance building), while inputs were pushed apart when saccaded between during free viewing (discrimination building). Thus, the biological implementation of the requisite internal signal relies on the distinction between periods of eye movement versus fixation to self-supervise visual representation learning across natural scenes.

I am a systems and computational neuroscientist studying the neural algorithms underlying high-level vision, visual learning, and visual cognition. We have focussed on how the geometry of faces, objects, and the larger scene is learned and coded by populations of neurons in the marmoset temporal lobe. We implement observed neural phenomena into computational models of vision and utilize behavioral paradigms to link neural phenomena to visual behavior. Scientists in the lab work at the intersection of neuroscience and machine learning in their research projects.

Unlearning the Anthropocene
Architecture after Human Exceptionalism

The lecture presents TAKK's design methodology through a selection of research and built projects that challenge anthropocentric assumptions in contemporary architecture. Integrating feminist thought, political ecology, and low-embedded-carbon material practices, it explores how critical theory becomes a design tool for questioning inherited spatial paradigms. Through research, experimentation, and construction, the lecture proposes architecture as a practice of negotiating new relationships between humans, other living beings, materials, and environmental systems, imagining more just, regenerative, and multispecies futures.

Mireia Luzárraga is an architect, researcher, educator, and co-founder of TAKK, an architecture and research practice based in Barcelona and New York, together with Alejandro Muiño. Her work explores the intersection of architecture, ecology, feminism, and politics, investigating how spatial practice can foster more equitable forms of life and new material imaginaries for the built environment.

She is an Assistant Professor at Columbia University GSAPP. In 2024, she was invited as Studio Critic at the SEKISUI HOUSE–KENGO KUMA Lab at the University of Tokyo. She has also taught and lectured internationally at institutions including Harvard GSD, ETH Zürich, Kyoto University, the Royal College of Art, the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, and die Angewandte Vienna.

Luzárraga is co-editor of 100 Words for Water (Lars Müller Publishers) and co-curator of the Catalan Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (2025). She has been named among Forbes' 50 Architects to Watch and AD's Most Influential Architects, and her work has received numerous international distinctions, including the FAD Award, Design Vanguard Award, COAM Award, and Best Archilovers Project Award.

Her work is held in the collections of institutions including the Vitra Design Museum, mudac Lausanne, FRAC Centre Val-de-Loire, MAK Center Los Angeles, and Disseny Hub Barcelona, while her practice spans public commissions and collaborations with clients such as MAXXI, Hermès, Moncler, Vitra, and Swatch.

This lecture will be held in person in the Sidara Auditorium (W41- 1216) and streamed online on YouTube.

Composer and MIT Senior Lecturer Edward Cohen was a vital part of Boston's New Music scene in the years leading up to his premature death. This concert celebrates his legacy with a performance of his 1978 work "Stone and Earth" for Mezzo-soprano and string orchestra. The soloist will be Krista River, with the ensemble conducted with Cohen's long-time friend and collaborator, David Hoose. Also on the program will be music by colleagues and students of Cohen, with premieres of pieces by Majorie Merryman, John Harbison and Charles Shadle. The evening will conclude with Peter Child's 1998 Sinfonietta.

Summary: Many have predicted that AI will revolutionize cyber conflict by enabling offense automation for faster, stealthier, and more damaging attacks. But the revolution has not happened, even though highly capable AI models have been available for several years. The article that Professor Maschmeyer presents in this seminar explains why: There is a gap between defense and offense when it comes to the limits on what AI can do. Cyber offense requires creative deception to burrow into systems and produce desired effects before being discovered. Cyber defense, by contrast, strives to detect such intrusions before they cause harm. AI models struggle with the creativity and deception necessary for offensive operations, but they excel at the pattern recognition that is key for defensive operations - and this relative advantage of defensive tasks increases as the stakes increase.

Title: Exceptional motives and exceptional local systems

Abstract: In 1996, Serre asked about the existence of motives with exceptional motivic Galois group. Such motives are now known to exist for all exceptional groups, due to work of Gross–Savin, Katz, Dettweiler–Reiter, Yun, Patrikis, Boxer–Calegari–Emerton–Levin– Patrikis–Madapusi Pera, Guralnick–Lubeck–Yu, and Faegerman (and possibly others). For all exceptional groups except E6, families of such motives were known, but until recently this was open for E6. I’ll survey this story, explain joint work with Krämer–Maculan constructing families of exceptional E6-motives—arising from the classical geometry of cubic 3-folds—and speculate about similar constructions for other exceptional groups.

Studio Ossidiana is a design practice based in the Netherlands, working across scales to create spaces, objects, exhibitions, and installations at the intersection of architecture, design, art, and landscape. The studio’s projects include experimental playgrounds for children and adults, floating gardens inhabited by birds, outdoor kitchens, land art pavilions on water, to be explored and cultivated by humans and other species.

Led by Alessandra Covini and Giovanni Bellotti, with Klaas van der Molen joining the studio in 2025, Studio Ossidiana collaborates with international institutions including the Centre Pompidou and the National Museum in Oslo. The studio’s work has been presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale (2021–2023), Milan Triennale (2022), Shenzhen Architecture Biennale (2022), Istanbul Design Biennial (2021), Chicago Architecture Biennial (2021), and Bruges Triennial (2024).

Alongside their design practice, Giovanni and Alessandra teach at international universities, including HEAD Genève (Haute école d’art et de design), where they lead a course exploring the relationship between plants and interiors.

Studio Ossidiana’s work has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Prix de Rome (2018), the Netherlands’ oldest award for designers under 35; the Italian Architecture Under 35 Award (2023); and nominations for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture / Mies van der Rohe Award (2024, 2026).
