Talk Title: Bonobo vocal communication and the evolution of compositionality

Abstract: Compositionality- the capacity to combine meaningful elements into larger structures whose meaning depends on the meanings of the parts and the way they are combined- is a hallmark of human language. In this talk, I will present new findings on the compositional capacities of wild bonobos. Specifically, by conducting a comprehensive investigation of meaning and adapting methods from linguistics, I will show that bonobo vocal communication extensively relies on compositionality. This suggests that the ability to construct complex meanings from smaller vocal units was already present in our ancestors at least 7 million years ago.

Title: Hierarchical Optimization predicts Plasticity in the Macaque Inferior Temporal Cortex following Object Trainin

Abstract: How does the primate brain coordinate plasticity when learning to discriminate new objects? In this talk, I will present results from a series of neurophysiological and computational modeling experiments investigating how object training changes representations in the primate ventral visual stream. Specifically, I will characterize how learning to discriminate new objects leads to differences in neural activity in the macaque inferior temporal (IT) cortex, including increased object selectivity, enhanced linear separability, and more invariant representations compared to untrained control animals. I will then introduce a computational framework using anatomically-mapped artificial neural network models of the ventral stream to ask why IT changed to the degree we observed. Our simulations showed that gradient-based task optimization accurately approximates the measured changes and predicts novel training-induced phenomena. Finally, I will discuss what these findings suggest about the usefulness of task optimization via gradient descent for understanding long-term training-induced plasticity in sensory cortices.

GEO–MATTERS asks how designers might respond to the earth’s matter, forces and signals. The lecture series attends to matter and material ecologies, including the unruly disturbances intensified by the climate crisis. Here, design works with earth systems, tracking material flows—greenhouse gases, heat, sediment, water, biomass, waste—across the extended territories, from quarries and farms to Arctic coastlines. Media also matters for geo-design because the globe is already an image, produced through systems that sense, record, and visualize the Earth— satellite tiles, climate-model outputs, air-quality dashboards, LiDAR point clouds, GIS layers, and more. GEO-MATTERS attends thus to geographic situatedness, material ecologies, and imaging systems through which Earth is assembled and geo–design is practiced.

To probe these systems, he employs a multimodal electron microscopy strategy that combines liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy (Liquid EM) with cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Cryo-EM enables high-resolution imaging of transient assemblies frozen in their native out-of-equilibrium states, while Liquid EM provides real-time observation of morphological evolution in solution. Together, these techniques offer unprecedented insight into the stochastic, heterogeneous pathways of active self-assembly and filament formation.

Patterson will show that driving the system away from equilibrium induces the formation of metastable morphologies with distinct dynamics. These findings have broad implications for designing synthetic materials that mimic biological adaptability and suggest a new paradigm in which structure and dynamics can be rationally tuned through energy landscape engineering. This work also illustrates the power of integrating advanced electron microscopy with controlled energy inputs to study nonequilibrium materials at molecular resolution.

Title: Controlling active matter via spatially or temporally varying activity

Abstract:

In active matter, energy injected at small length scales drives dynamics at larger scales. Varying this injection of energy across space or time can lead to particularly intricate or striking behaviour, holding great promise for design, functionality, and control. I will discuss these possibilities in two contexts, focusing on theory and numerics: First will be shape-programmed nematic sheets, which morph into curved surfaces upon activation by stimuli such as illumination, and have attracted interest for potential applications in fluidics and robotics. Complex shape changes are typically ‘programmed’ by patterning the nematic director (a material property), while the stimulus remains spatially uniform. A limitation of that paradigm is that typically only one target geometry can be attained as the stimulus varies. I will show that this limitation can be overcome by patterning the stimulus itself, enabling programming of continuous pathways through shape space. Second, I will explore confined polar active fluids, in which macroscopic flows are generated by self-propelled constituent particles. Remarkably, such fluids support propagating waves even in the overdamped limit; but how can we control those waves? I will characterize the excitation spectrum for a Toner-Tu fluid in a 2D disk, and explore its dependence on various parameters. I will then show that oscillatory activity can be used to parametrically drive a variety of excitations: a simple avenue for control of spatial patterning via temporal modulation.

Title: Quasi-periodic 3D Stokes Waves in Finite Depth

Abstract: Starting with the pioneering computations of Stokes in 1847, the search for traveling waves in fluid mechanics has always been a fundamental topic, since they can be seen as building blocks for understanding long-time dynamics.

In this talk, I shall discuss recent results concerning the construction of quasi-periodic waves in fluid me-
chanics (for the Euler, Navier–Stokes, and water waves equations) by means of Nash–Moser bifurcation tech-
niques, normal form methods, spectral analysis, and pseudo-differential operator techniques.

I will then focus on the construction of quasi-periodic 3D Stokes waves for a free-surface fluid of finite depth.
These solutions are not stationary in any reference frame and are approximately given by arbitrarily large finite
sums of traveling waves whose velocity speeds are rationally independent.

This is a very challenging small divisors problem due to the dispersive quasi-linear nature of the PDE in
dimension greater than two, which leads to strong perturbative effects and significant resonance phenomena.

Title: Radiative Vlasov-Maxwell Equations

Abstract: The Radiative Vlasov-Maxwell equations model the radiative kinetics of collision less relativistic plasma. In them, the Lorentz force is modified by the addition of radiation reaction forces. The radiation forces produce damping of particle energy, but these forces are not divergence-free in momentum space, which has an effect of concentration near zero momentum. We prove unconditional global regularity of solutions for a class of Radiative Vlasov-Maxwell equations with large initial data.

Drawing on work under the Global Biodiversity Framework’s Target 2 and Integrated Landscape Management initiatives, the seminar will examine how restoration is not a binary shift from “degraded” to “restored,” but a continuum of recovery, where agricultural lands, rangelands, forests, and agroforestry systems can progressively rebuild ecosystem services.

Mekong Hydrocorruption: Water, Dams and the Subjugation of a Great River

The Mekong River is an exceedingly dammed system with massive, and discernible impacts on its hydrological flows, sediment loads, fisheries, and riparian livelihoods. But it also has an effect on its regional relations. While the hydropower build-out is often cast as reinforcing China’s hydro-hegemony, or Laos’ impacts on downstream livelihoods, Geheb argues that it brings the Mekong Region closer. He contends it does this through the electricity it supplies and through the intra-regional collusion it has fostered and enabled. Drawing mainly on Laos and Cambodia’s hydropower development experience, Geheb offers a story of graft, concrete, and the destruction of one of the world’s most astonishing rivers.

About the speakers:

Kim Geheb is a political ecologist and practitioner-scholar with the Center for International Forestry Research/World Agroforestry Center in Nairobi, Kenya. He specializes in integrated natural resources management, water governance, and the political economy of natural resource institutions. He has worked extensively on food-water systems in Africa and Southeast Asia, and brings to both contexts a sustained focus on how power structures shape—and limit—governance outcomes. His current research applies complexity science and practice theory to the design of interventions that address systemic drivers of landscape degradation rather than their symptoms. His work draws on political ecology, commons theory, and assemblage thinking to reframe conventional approaches to ecosystem governance as fundamentally questions of institutional power and collective action. He obtained his doctorate from the School of African and Asian Studies at the University of Sussex, UK.

Khalil Walji is a global practitioner-scholar working at the intersection of ecosystem restoration, integrated landscape management, and sustainable food systems across the Global South. From 2021–2026, he is serving as Deputy Coordinator of the EU-funded Landscapes For Our Future (LFF) programme at CIFOR-ICRAF, advancing integrated landscape approaches through multi-stakeholder engagement, adaptive governance, and learning-oriented practice. Trained as a soil scientist with an interdisciplinary background, his work focuses on translating systems-level theory into practice in complex landscapes where food security, biodiversity, and livelihoods intersect.

Title: Excursion functions on p-adic groups

Abstract:

I present material from my student Jacksyn Bakeberg's thesis. The Bernstein center of a p-adic group is its ring of conjugation-invariant distributions; this ring controls the representations of the group. Fargues-Scholze gives a geometric construction of a subring of the Bernstein center, consisting of excursion operators, which are labeled by elements of the Galois group. One can think of these operators as an encoding of the Langlands correspondence. It would be interesting to give a completely explicit description of these excursion operators. We do exactly this in the case of G = SL_2, where we show that the excursion operator is represented by a function (an "excursion function") on a dense open locus.

Title: Fast rational function approximation by continued fractions

Abstract: While global polynomial and trigonometric approximations are mainstays of scientific computing, their attractiveness diminishes when singularities are near the domain of interest. For such problems, rational functions may offer far greater efficiency. The AAA algorithm made practical computational rational approximation possible in multiple applications. An alternative proposed by Salazar Celis in 2024 using continued fractions requires only basic arithmetic and reduces construction time from 𝒪(n⁴) to 𝒪(n³). I will describe recent extensions of and improvements to Salazar's algorithm to gain additional speedups and evaluate residues and derivatives in 𝒪(n) operations. Both algorithms are implemented in a Julia package with additional Python bindings. On a variety of examples, continued fractions are consistently faster than AAA as implemented in the package and in SciPy.

This exhibition draws on archival materials from the Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT (AKDC) to explore a century of cultural heritage preservation in Aleppo, Syria. It takes as its point of departure the work of Kamil al-Ghazzi (1853–1933), the pioneering Aleppine historian whose influential three-volume chronicle, Nahr al-Dhahab fī Tārīkh Ḥalab (The River of Gold in the History of Aleppo), was published between 1924 and 1926.

Ink, Stone, and Silver Light presents three modes of documentation—manuscript, built form, and photography—through which Aleppo’s urban memory has been recorded and preserved. Featuring figures such as Michel Écochard and Yasser Tabbaa alongside al-Ghazzi, the exhibition traces overlapping efforts to capture the spirit of a city shaped by commerce, craft, and coexistence. At a time when Syria again confronts upheaval and displacement, these archival fragments offer models for preserving the past while envisioning futures rooted in dignity, knowledge, and place.

Title: Geometry, Transport, and Control in Laminar Fluid Flows

Abstract:

In this thesis, we investigate a collection of problems involving fluid flows and transport

phenomena. For example, we investigate how the shape of bodies can be engineered so

that unexpected forces arise when the body is immersed in a background flow. We then

investigate the role of domain symmetries in heat transfer problems, and thereby resolve a

recent conjecture in the field. We elucidate how boundary geometry and material properties

govern wave instabilities beneath levitating drops. We demonstrate that electromagnetic

forcing enables a new class of flow topologies in Hele-Shaw flows, both theoretically and

experimentally. We also study the problem of advection-diffusion in multiply-connected

(many-body) potential flows. We lastly show that particle control in generic Stokes flows

is governed by a Riemannian metric defined over the fluid domain, the geodesics of which

correspond to energy-optimal transport paths. This formulation is developed explicitly for

magnetohydrodynamic Hele-Shaw flows, and its generalization to more general Stokes flows

in 2D and 3D is described.

This thesis involves a combination of theoretical, experimental, and numerical work.

Theoretical analysis allows us to rationalize the emergence of waves beneath a levitating drop

via the asymptotic solution to an eigenvalue problem. Other classical applied mathematical

techniques, including conformal mapping and complex analysis, are shown to apply beyond

their usual domains of application. For example, we demonstrate their application to

advection-diffusion problems in geometrically complex domains and also to formulating

electromagnetic control strategies in Hele-Shaw cells.

This collection of work showcases the manner in which geometry may be exploited to

design and control systems involving fluid flow and transport.

Summary: States pursue hegemony to achieve security. Does it work? Integrating psychological research on power with classical realist thought on security expectations, Professor Pomeroy will demonstrate in this seminar that rising power increases leaders' expectations of security. These heightened expectations of security make previously tolerable threats feel more existential. Despite material gains in security, the sense of power paradoxically makes leaders feel less secure. Historical evidence from the United States' nineteenth century rise to regional hegemony supports this expectation. Power is useful for many objectives. The sense of security is not one of them.

Abstract Title: Single-cell Imaging of Microbial Communities across Different Spatial and Temporal Scales

Abstract:

Biofilm is an important lifestyle of bacteria where bacterial cells collectively form surface-associated aggregates embedded in a polymeric matrix they secrete. Important in industry and medicine, biofilms also represent a unique form of growing active matter with unique physical and material properties. In this talk, I will highlight our recent work on developing a platform for imaging live, growing biofilm at single-cell resolution, using Vibrio cholerae as the model organism. I will show how bacterial cells physically communicate with each other and the environment to form ordered architecture reminiscent of nematic liquid crystals. Moreover, I will talk about our recent discovery that heterogeneity in gene expression leads to unexpected pattern formation in biofilm through a drag-based sorting mechanism. I will also highlight ongoing research in the lab on extending the imaging capability to more natural environments including marine animal hosts. I will end by showing our recent findings on the mechanical properties of the extracellular matrix that underlie the architecture of the biofilm.

Bio:

Jing Yan is currently an Assistant Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and a member of the Quantitative Biology Institute (Qbio) at Yale. Originally from Shanghai, he obtained his B.S. degree from the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering at Peking University in China with a focus on organic synthesis. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Working with Steve Granick, he developed novel reconfigurable, active colloidal materials during his Ph.D. In 2014, he moved to Princeton and transitioned to microbiology and quantitative biology as a joint postdoctoral fellow in the department of Molecular Biology and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Working with Bonnie Bassler, Howard Stone, and Ned Wingreen, he studied bacterial biofilms with an interdisciplinary approach. His current lab focuses on using biophysical and biochemical approaches to understand the mechanism of biofilm formation as well as the role of biofilms in ecology and infections. He has received multiple awards, including the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, Sloan Fellowship, and Simons foundation award on Early Career Investigator in Aquatic Microbial Ecology and Evolution.

Title: Affine Springer fibers and Slodowy varieties

Abstract: We realize a natural subvariety of the affine Springer fiber as an affine bundle over a Lagrangian subvariety of a Slodowy variety. In special cases, this yields a description of a fundamental domain for the affine Springer fiber under the Kazhdan-Lusztig lattice action, generalizing Lusztig's results in "Remarks on affine Springer fibres". Our results also provide evidence for the flatness conjecture of families of affine Springer fibers over GKM strata (conjectured by Finkelberg-Kazhdan-Varshavsky). This is a joint work in progress with Pablo Boixeda Alvarez.

Raúl joined the Chemistry faculty at Rice in the summer of 2022 and is the Norman Hackerman Welch Young Investigator Junior Chair. Prior to joining Rice, Raúl was an Assistant Professor from 2018 to 2022 in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh. He was born in Chihuahua City, México. During his undergraduate years Raúl worked intermittently as a research assistant in the laboratory of Prof. Sossina Haile (Caltech). He received a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Monterrey Tec (Mexico) in 2010. He then moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts to pursue a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Harvard under the mentorship of Prof. Ted Betley. Early in 2016, he started as a Columbia Nano Initiative Postdoctoral Fellow under the supervision of Prof. Colin Nuckolls. At Rice University, his group's research interests are in the formation of polynuclear catalysts for small molecule activation, develop methods to radially contort aromatic systems, and interested in the design of anion receptors for water remediation.

Title: Shuffle Theorems, Sandpiles, and Lattice Paths

Abstract: The shuffle theorem of Carlsson and Mellit proved a long-conejctured combinatorial formula for the coefficients of the symmetric function \nabla e_n in terms of statistics of lattice paths. In this talk I will discuss recent joint work with Michele D'Adderio (Università di Pisa), Mark Dukes (University College Dublin), Alessandro Iraci (Università Telematica Pigaso), Yvan Le Borgne (LaBRI Bordeaux), and Anna Vanden Wyngaerd (Université Libre de Bruxelles) in which we give a new interpretation of this symmetric function in terms of the combinatorial dynamics of the abelian sandpile model. Additionally, I will discuss possible connections to other lattice path models related to symmetric functions.

In this interdisciplinary presentation, artist Heather Bird Harris and dendrochronologist Clay Tucker, joined in conversation by ecologist Neil Pederson, invite audiences to read tree rings as living archives—primary sources that record centuries of environmental change and human intervention.

Drawing on collaborative research with some of Georgia’s oldest living trees, Harris and Tucker show how patterns of growth and stress preserved in tree rings reveal climate shifts, ecological disruption, and the lasting impacts of American settler colonization. As climate change increasingly disrupts seasonal cycles, these rings also expose a growing temporal instability, a breakdown in the rhythms of growth and rest that mirrors how our own sense of time is being unsettled by ecological upheaval. This program invites audiences to learn how to read these living records, expanding our understanding of time beyond human history and deepening awareness of the intertwined fate of all life on Earth.

This exhibition draws on archival materials from the Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT (AKDC) to explore a century of cultural heritage preservation in Aleppo, Syria. It takes as its point of departure the work of Kamil al-Ghazzi (1853–1933), the pioneering Aleppine historian whose influential three-volume chronicle, Nahr al-Dhahab fī Tārīkh Ḥalab (The River of Gold in the History of Aleppo), was published between 1924 and 1926.

Ink, Stone, and Silver Light presents three modes of documentation—manuscript, built form, and photography—through which Aleppo’s urban memory has been recorded and preserved. Featuring figures such as Michel Écochard and Yasser Tabbaa alongside al-Ghazzi, the exhibition traces overlapping efforts to capture the spirit of a city shaped by commerce, craft, and coexistence. At a time when Syria again confronts upheaval and displacement, these archival fragments offer models for preserving the past while envisioning futures rooted in dignity, knowledge, and place.

Title: Compiler-Enhanced Numerical Algorithms beyond Automatic Differentiation

Abstract: Automatic differentiation occupies a central role in numerical algorithms for nonlinear equations, differential equations, and optimization. This thesis reinterprets automatic differentiation as a paradigm of program transformation enabled by modern compiler techniques, and explores how such techniques can systematically generate not only derivatives but also a broader class of algorithmic components from user-defined programs. By introducing principles of symbolic-numeric computing that leverage symbolic intermediate representations, the thesis establishes a unified framework for arbitrary-order differentiation and the automatic synthesis of high-level algorithmic components. These methods are then applied to develop advanced algorithms for solving nonlinear equations, ordinary and stochastic differential equations, and physics-informed neural networks. Through both theoretical insights and practical tool development, the thesis demonstrates that compiler techniques can significantly enhance the efficiency, flexibility, and capabilities of numerical computation.

Title: "Logarithmic cobordism and Donaldson-Thomas invariants"

Abstract: In this thesis we construct a ‘logarithmic’ cobordism ring of varieties equipped with an snc (simple normal crossings) divisor. The relations in this ring come from simple normal crossings degenerations, and since invariants of snc pairs satisfy a degeneration formalism, this allows us to use our cobordism ring to study invariants of snc pairs. In particular, we apply our log cobordism ring to prove a conjecture of Maulik-Ranganathan on zero dimensional log Donaldson-Thomas invariants. Furthermore, motivated by the fact that invariants in log geometry are invariant under logarithmic blow ups, we prove that the log cobordism ring with this further log blow up relation collapses to the algebraic cobordism ring of Levine-Pandharipande. This latter theorem serves as an illustration that although log enumerative geometry creates many more cases by allowing for varieties to have an snc boundary, the invariants are highly constrained due to the invariance under degeneration and log blow ups.

Ellan is a historian of science and technology and an instructor and researcher at MIT, where she teaches in the Technology and Policy Program (TPP), the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS), and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE). She is also the co-founder and board director of Station1, a nonprofit higher education institution built around an inclusive, cross-disciplinary model of socially-directed science and technology education and research.

Beyond MIT, Ellan serves on the board of the Lawrence History Center and The Watch Library, reflecting her commitment to preserving and connecting communities through history and culture.

As an MIT alum, Ellan earned her Ph.D. in History, Anthropology, and Science, Technology and Society from MIT, where her dissertation examined academic-industrial cooperation in the early 20th century. During her time at MIT, she was involved in the Graduate Student Council, the Institute Wide Task Force for the Future of MIT Education, the Faculty Policy Committee, the Creative Arts Council, and the List Gallery Advisory Committee.

Abstract:

What does “normal” look like in a system that grows, adapts, and scales at extraordinary speed? How do its underlying patterns shift as the network expands from its early days to a billion-fold increase in scale?

In this seminar, Dr. Kepner will explore how advances in high-performance, privacy-preserving AI graph analysis tools open new windows into the Internet’s behavior. His work sheds light on emergence, structure, and stability within this constantly changing global system.

Dr. Kepner will explain the deep connections between graphs and matrices and more general mathematical concepts of semirings and associative (token) arrays that are the foundations of modern large language model (LLM) agentic AI systems. These mathematical concepts form the basis of the high performance GraphBLAS sparse matrix standard and the D4M (Dynamic Distributed Dimensional Model) associative array library that can analyze the largest networks in the world while preserving privacy.

Bio:

Dr. Jeremy Kepner is an MIT Lincoln Laboratory Fellow. He founded the Lincoln Laboratory Supercomputing Center and pioneered the establishment of the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center. He has developed novel big data and parallel computing software used by thousands of scientists and engineers worldwide. He has led several embedded computing efforts, which earned him a 2011 R&D 100 Award. Kepner has chaired the SIAM Data Mining conference, the IEEE Big Data conference, and the IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing conference. Kepner is the author of two bestselling books, Parallel MATLAB for Multicore and Multinode Computers, and Graph Algorithms in the Language of Linear Algebra. His peer-reviewed publications include works on abstract algebra, astronomy, astrophysics, cloud computing, cybersecurity, data mining, databases, graph algorithms, health sciences, plasma physics, signal processing, and 3D visualization. Title: Besting Good-Turing for probability estimation over large domains

Abstract: When faced with a small sample from a large universe of possible outcomes, scientists often turn to the venerable GoodTuring estimator. Despite its pedigree, however, this estimator comes with considerable drawbacks, such as the need to handtune smoothing parameters and the lack of a precise optimality guarantee. We introduce a tuning-parameter-free estimator that bests Good-Turing in both theory and practice. Our method marries two classic ideas, namely Robbins’ empirical Bayes and Kiefer-Wolfowitz’s nonparametric maximum likelihood, to learn an implicit prior from data and then convert it into probability estimates. We prove that the resulting estimator attains the optimal instance-wise risk up to logarithmic factors in the competitive framework of Orlitsky and Suresh, and that the Good-Turing estimator is strictly suboptimal in the same framework. Simulations on synthetic data and experiments with English corpora and U.S. Census data show that the proposed estimator consistently outperforms both the Good-Turing estimator and explicit Bayes procedures and even in certain out-of-sample settings. This is based on joint work with Yanjun Han (NYU), Jonathan NilesWeed (NYU), and Yandi Shen (CMU), available at https://arxiv.org/abs/2509.07355.

Biography: Yihong Wu is James A. Attwood Professor and Department Chair of Statistics and Data Science at Yale University. He received his B.E. degree from Tsinghua University in 2006 and Ph.D. degree from Princeton University in 2011. He was a postdoctoral fellow with the Statistics Department in The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania from 2011 to 2012 and an assistant professor in the Department of ECE at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2013 to 2016. His research interests are in the theoretical and algorithmic aspects of high-dimensional statistics, information theory, and optimization. He was elected an IMS fellow in 2023 and was a recipient of the NSF CAREER award in 2017 and the Sloan Research Fellowship in Mathematics in 2018.

Title of thesis: Sum-of-Squares Methods for Nonlocal Games and Quantum Protocols

Abstract: Nonlocal games are a foundational tool for understanding entanglement and for constructing quantum protocols in settings involving multiple spatially separated quantum devices. This thesis applies combinatorial and sum-of-squares methods to the analysis of such games, with an eye towards structural guarantees and applications to verification. On the structural side, we study nonlocal games arising from graph-theoretic and multipartite settings. These include games motivated by graph-theoretic property testing, as well as games capturing monogamy phenomena in multipartite quantum systems. On the protocol side, we study compiled nonlocal games, in which the interaction is between a classical verifier and a single quantum device. In this setting, we give a complete quantum characterization of XOR games, an important subclass of nonlocal games, and develop a general computational framework for analyzing all compiled nonlocal games.

Title: On Beilinson–Bloch–Kato conjecture for polarized motives

In the conjugate self-dual case, we show that if the central $L$-value does not vanish, then the associated Bloch--Kato Selmer group with coefficients in a suitable local field vanishes. In the self-dual analytic rank-zero case, we reduce the conjecture to a conjecture in the endoscopic Rankin--Selberg case related to the orthogonal Gross--Prasad periods.

Title: Genus 2 curves and modular forms on Shimura curves

Abstract: This thesis studies geometric aspects of modular forms on Shimura curves over the rational numbers. The motives associated to modular forms of weight 2 have been long understood as isogeny factors in the Jacobians of Shimura curves. For modular forms of weight at least 3, we provide a new incarnation of the motive associated to such a modular form, built from the universal genus 2 curve over a Shimura curve. To illustrate the utility of such a description, we construct generalized diagonal cycles relevant to the central vanishing properties of triple-product L-series (via the conjectures of Beilinson).

Title: Short star products for quantum symmetric pairs and applications

Abstract: The goal of the talk is to describe a bridge between two directions in representation theory. The first is the theory of quantum symmetric pairs of Letzter-Kolb based on the classification of Kac-Wang of automorphisms of Kac-Moody algebras. The second is the theory of short star products of Etingof-Stryker and Beem-Peelaers-Rastelli. The central result is that every quantum symmetric pair coideal subalgebra is realized via a short star product on a quantum horospherical subalgebra. This allows to deduce from definitions many results that before were proved by long and diverse methods, such as the existence of antiautomorphisms and bar involutions of such algebras, the so called "fundamental lemma for quantum symmetric pairs" and others. Lastly, we will describe an explicit formula expressing all quasi K-matrices for these quantum symmetric pairs in terms of the much studied quasi R-matrices of Drinfeld and Lusztig.

Talk Title: Searching for the language of thought

Abstract: In this talk, I will cover our work on how neural circuits construct more sophisticated concepts out of modular parts. The idea that composition allows infinite use of finite means to express thought dates back to von Humboldt’s classic study of human language, yet insight into its mechanistic underpinnings has been elusive. Resolving this required a confluence of three difficult milestones: (ii) a distinction between composition and less sophisticated forms of reuse; (ii) a compellingly compositional behavior in a model organism for which we have statistical power and large-scale circuit interrogation tools; and (iii) an appropriate theoretical framework for elucidating how neural activations may speak to a compositional mechanism. Our pivotal breakthrough was to demonstrate that in open-ended settings, rats innately and robustly utilize compositional solutions as von Humboldt intended it: iteratively composing more and more complex abstractions starting from an impoverished set of elemental parts. In addition to describing this behavioral experimental framework, I will cover how by exploiting large-scale cellular resolution recordings, we then found an astonishingly lego-like underlying mechanism in prefrontal cortex.

About the Performers

Lani Lee is a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering researching cell mechanics in the group of Prof. Ming Guo. She has studied with Dr. Kerry Deal in the MIT Emerson/Harris Program since starting graduate school. As an Emerson/Harris Fellow, she presented a solo recital of art songs by Falla, Brahms, Fauré, Hahn, and Vaughan Williams. She minored in Music as an undergraduate at MIT. In her first year, she discovered her love of singing with Concert Choir and served as an officer for many years. She was featured as a soloist for J.S. Bach’s Magnificat and Beethoven’s Mass in C Major with Concert Choir, as well as J.S. Bach’s Lutheran Mass in A Major, BWV 234, and Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, BWV 12 with Chamber Chorus. She is also the winner of the John Oliver Choral Award in 2022. Outside of MIT, she sings with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the mixed-voice symphonic choir of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops, and writes occasional concert critique pieces for the Boston Classical Review. Lani has also enjoyed exploring music with other amazing opportunities on campus, such as Chamber Music Society, Collaborative Piano, Rambax (Senegalese Drum Ensemble), Ribotones, Next Act, and Musical Theatre Guild. With the thriving music community at MIT, she helped present CAMIT-funded concert performances with Pocket Opera Productions, where she sang the roles of Tisbe in Rossini’s La Cenerentola and Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto. Outside of music, she enjoys hiking, activities involving water in any state of matter (SCUBA, sailing, ice skating, skiing), maintaining her various fermented goods (kimchi, kombucha, sourdough), and food (baking, cooking, eating).

About the Emerson/Harris Program for Private Study

Support for private musical study is available for students through the Emerson/Harris Program (E/HP), which offers merit-based financial awards for outstanding achievement on instruments or voice in classical, jazz, or world music. Each academic year, the program awards Scholarships and Fellowships to nearly seventy students who commit to a full year’s study and participate in the musical life of MIT.

Auditions for the program are held at the beginning of each academic year. Private teacher selections, made in consultation with the E/HP jury heads, may include instructors from MIT staff and throughout Greater Boston. About the Program

Born from the atrocities of Kristallnacht and the brink of WWII, Sir Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time is a powerful choral masterpiece, acting as a profound musical cry against oppression and inhumanity. Following the harrowing story of a young refugee driven to violence by persecution, this poignant oratorio blends the structure of Handel’s Messiah and Bach St Matthew Pasison with the raw emotion of African-American spirituals to create a universal plea for justice, peace, and reconciliation. Conducted by Ryan Turner in collaboration with MIT Concert Choir and MITSO.

PhD student Victor Yaneng Wang, pianist, composer and winner of the Concerto competition, premieres his newly composed work for piano and orchestra "The World Resonates," conducted by Adam Boyles.

About the MIT Symphony Orchestra
The central mission of the MIT Symphony Orchestra is the cultural enhancement of education at MIT by promoting music performance at the highest level of artistic excellence among MIT students, by nurturing new works and young artists, by developing and sustaining the widest possible audience. The orchestra’s repertoire consists of works from the entire symphonic canon, spanning works of the early Baroque era to contemporary compositions, and including music for film and theatre.

Compositions by MIT faculty are also part of MITSO’s repertoire. The orchestra recently recorded Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique, and has participated in masterclasses with Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Roger Norrington, and Nicholas McGegan. Frequent collaborations with other ensembles such as the MIT Concert Choir, the theater program, with members of the faculty and performances by MITSOlite, a chamber orchestra comprised of MITSO members, are also part of MITSO’s activities.

The students in the MIT Symphony Orchestra come from a variety of fields including: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Biology, Mathematics, Brain & Cognitive Sciences, Nuclear Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Aeronautics and Astronautics, Management, Architecture, and Materials Science & Engineering.

Featuring both returning and new community partner organizations, themes for the 2026 symposium will include: farming and food systems, health impacts of climate change, Indigenous spiritual sovereignty and climate chaos, experiential learning, and more.

Described as "sleek, new," "hyper-fluent" and “a composer that rocks” by the New York Times, Pascal Le Boeuf is a GRAMMY-award winning composer, jazz pianist, and producer whose works range from improvised music to hybridizing notation-based chamber music with production-based technology.

Recent compositions include “Are We Dreaming the Same Dream?” commissioned by Akropolis Reed Quintet with drummer Christian Euman; “Imprints” for Alarm Will Sound; “Playground” commissioned by Orchestra of St. Lukes; “Triple Concerto” for violin, percussion duo, and orchestra featuring Barbora Kolářová and Arx Duo; “I Am Not A Number” commissioned by New World Symphony; and “Out of the Gate” commissioned and premiered by Nu Deco Ensemble.

Recent commercial recordings and videos include collaborations with Akropolis Reed Quintet & Christian Euman, Tasha Warren & Dave Eggar, Friction Quartet, JACK Quartet, Hub New Music, Todd Reynolds, Sara Caswell, Jessica Meyer, Nick Photinos, Four/Ten Media, Bec Plexus featuring Ian Chang (of Son Lux), Dayna Stephens, and the Le Boeuf Brothers Quintet (co-led by Remy Le Boeuf) praised by the New Yorker for "clearing their own path, mixing the solid swing of the jazz tradition with hip-hop, indie rock, and the complex techniques of classical modernism."

As a keyboardist, Pascal has played as support for D’Angelo’s Black Messiah tour and Clean Bandit’s Rather Be tour with Australian pop artist Meg Mac. He actively performs with Le Boeuf Brothers, Jessie Montgomery’s Everything Band, vocalist/technologist Jamie Lidell, saxophonist Jeff Coffin, and his piano trio "Pascal's Triangle" with bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Justin Brown.

Pascal’s most recent awards include a 2025 GRAMMY for “Best Instrumental Composition”, a 2024 Barlow Commission, a 2023 Guggenheim Fellowship, a 2020 Copland House Residency Award, and various Independent Music Awards in “Jazz”, “Eclectic”, “Electronica” and “Music Video” categories. Pascal has received commissions and grants from the NEA, New World Symphony, Nu Deco Ensemble, the Barlow Endowment, the Lake George Music Festival, Lincoln Center Stage, Chamber Music America, New Music USA, and ASCAP.

Pascal is an Assistant Professor of Music at Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he teaches composition. Previously, he served as an Assistant Professor of the Practice of Music and Technology at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Composition from Princeton University where he was the recipient of a Harold W. Dodds Honorific Fellowship. He received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Manhattan School of Music where he studied jazz piano with Kenny Barron.

Pascal lives in the Boston area with his wife, composer Molly Herron, and their two kids Baxter and Io.

ABOUT MIT FESTIVAL JAZZ ENSEMBLEThe MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble (MIT FJE) was founded in 1963 by Boston jazz icon Herb Pomeroy and led since 1999 by Dr. Frederick Harris, Jr. This advanced 18 to 20-member big band/jazz ensemble is comprised of outstanding MIT undergraduate and graduate students studying a wide range of disciplines. An advanced combo is formed from the membership of the MIT FJE. MIT FJE performs traditional and contemporary jazz ensemble literature, including student compositions and new works written for the MIT FJE by major jazz composers. Improvisation is a prominent part of the MIT FJE experience. MIT FJE has released five professional recordings including its major jazz label debut on Sunnyside in 2015, Infinite Winds, which received a five-star review from DownBeat and was chosen by the magazine as one of its “Best Albums of 2015 Five-Star Masterpieces.”

The FJE has a long history of performing original music by MIT students and composers from around the world. Since 2001, it has presented over 50 world premieres. Among others, Mark Harvey, Herb Pomeroy, Jamshied Sharifi, Ran Blake, John Harbison, Chick Corea, Joe Lovano, Gunther and George Schuller, Kenny Werner, Don Byron, Steve Turre, Magali Souriau, Guillermo Klein, Chris Cheek, Miguel Zenón, Dominique Eade, and Luciana Souza have collaborated with the MIT FJE. In January of 2019 the FJE participated in a highly successful cultural exchange, touring Puerto Rico with Miguel Zenón, presenting concerts in various venues and also STEM workshops in middle and high schools.

This exhibition draws on archival materials from the Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT (AKDC) to explore a century of cultural heritage preservation in Aleppo, Syria. It takes as its point of departure the work of Kamil al-Ghazzi (1853–1933), the pioneering Aleppine historian whose influential three-volume chronicle, Nahr al-Dhahab fī Tārīkh Ḥalab (The River of Gold in the History of Aleppo), was published between 1924 and 1926.

Ink, Stone, and Silver Light presents three modes of documentation—manuscript, built form, and photography—through which Aleppo’s urban memory has been recorded and preserved. Featuring figures such as Michel Écochard and Yasser Tabbaa alongside al-Ghazzi, the exhibition traces overlapping efforts to capture the spirit of a city shaped by commerce, craft, and coexistence. At a time when Syria again confronts upheaval and displacement, these archival fragments offer models for preserving the past while envisioning futures rooted in dignity, knowledge, and place.

Speaker: Ke Chen (Wang Lab)

Abstract: Excessive and compulsive drug use despite adverse consequences is a hallmark of addiction, yet individuals differ markedly in their vulnerability. Drugs of abuse alter endogenous dopamine (DA) signaling, but shared principles linking DA dynamics to compulsive use across individuals and drug classes are unclear. Here, we monitored DA release in nucleus accumbens (NAc) medial shell during cocaine or fentanyl self-administration, with or without punishment, in large mouse cohorts. Contingent cocaine and fentanyl self-administration evoked complex and individually distinct DA dynamics, yet a robust negative correlation emerged across both drugs: high takers showed lower drug-evoked DA signals. Under punished drug taking, cocaine and fentanyl produced distinct DA signatures of compulsivity. A computational model grounded in the Actor-Critic temporal-difference (TD) learning framework with considerations ofinternal states, action cost and drug-specific effects captured the observed diversity in DA dynamics across conditions, unifying NAc DA as encoding TD reward prediction errors in addiction.

Speakers:

Dafna H. Rand, PhD, is the former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor and the author of the first State Department Learning Agenda. Previously, she directed the U.S. State Department’s Office of Foreign Assistance, overseeing $70 billion in annual U.S. foreign aid. Rand has held multiple positions in the U.S. government, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, member of the Secretary’s Policy Planning staff, and National Security Council official.

Jaclyn Kellon is a Director of Global Policy at the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), where she is responsible for supply chain security. Jaclyn previously served as a Foreign Affairs Officer in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation’s Office of Critical Technology Protection (ISN/CTP), advising on semiconductor and research security policy, at the U.S. Department of State.

Vincent W.S. Chan is the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Chair Professor of MIT EECS Department and the Artificial Intelligence & Decision Making Sector of the Schwarzman College of Computing. A 2024 IEEE Thomas Edison Medal recipient, he has been Chair of the Defense Science Board Task Force on Defense Communications and Networks, Chair of the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Advisory Committee, and a member of the Intelligence Science Board. In 1989, he led the first “Dual-Use Technology Investment” to establish industry-government consortiums. His research focuses on optical networks, cognitive heterogeneous network management and control, resiliency and security.

Moderator:

Diana Zhu is the Chief Executive Officer of MIT Science Policy Review and a PhD candidate in the MIT Department of Political Science and affiliated with the Center’s Security Studies Program. She specializes in international relations and quantitative methods. Her research interests center around topics of international cooperation, with a focus on inter-state technology cooperation and patterns of foreign aid.

Title: A New Proof of the Existence Conjecture and its Applications to Extremal and Probabilistic Design Theory

Abstract: We discuss the recently developed method of refined absorption and how it is used to provide a new proof of the Existence Conjecture for combinatorial designs. This method can also be applied to resolve open problems in extremal and probabilistic design theory while providing a unified framework for these problems. Crucially, the main absorption theorem can be used as a “black-box” in these applications obviating the need to reprove the absorption step for each different setup. Joint work with Michelle Delcourt.

We convene the MIT-area community to identify foundational principles that are shared by biological and artificial intelligence, and translate them into deployable, venture-scale technologies.

We will connect empirical evidence from cognitive development, systems neuroscience, and modern AI systems with formal structure in learning and reasoning, including sample efficiency, sparse compositionality, invariances, memory, optimization dynamics, and generalization.

By the end of the series, we will have identified and tested key conjectures about intelligence and built new collaborations between labs and startups.

Who should attend: Theorists and experimentalists in ML/AI, neuroscience, cognitive science, and applied math; founders, investors, and industry researchers exploring principle-driven AI products. Graduate students and postdocs are strongly encouraged to participate.

Format & cadence: Roughly biweekly, hybrid (MIT campus + Zoom). Each session features a 35–45 minute talk, a 15–20 minute cross-disciplinary discussion.

Title: Twisted string bordism in 7 dimensions with applications to anomaly cancellation

Abstract: In this defense, I will first give a brief overview of anomalies in quantum field theories and how they are studied with techniques from algebraic topology via the Dai-Freed formalism. I will then describe joint work with I. Basile, C. Krulewski, and G. Leone motivated by anomaly cancellation problems in 6d supergravity. I will show how we leverage the unstable classification of vector bundles over ℂℙ² to construct explicit generators for seven-dimensional twisted string bordism groups. Finally, I will outline the construction of a complete family of invariants detecting the torsion order of these generators, which can be seen as twisted analogs of the Adams e-invariant, and exhibit an example computation.

Title: The spectrum of Anosov Subgroups

Abstract: For a convex cocompact discrete subgroup of SL(2,R), the resonance spectrum serves as the fundamental spectral invariant of the associated locally symmetric space. While the theory of Anosov subgroups has provided a successful generalization of convex cocompactness to higher-rank Lie groups, a corresponding spectral theory of resonances has been lacking.

In this talk, I will propose a definition of resonances for Anosov subgroups, building on microlocal methods for open hyperbolic dynamics introduced by Dyatlov and Guillarmou. Furthermore, I will explain how these analytic tools establish the meromorphic continuation of multivariate Poincaré series.

Talk Title: Lithium and the Biology of Aging and Alzheimer's Disease

Bio: Bruce A. Yankner, M.D., Ph.D. is Professor of Genetics and Neurology at Harvard Medical School, Co-Director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for Biology of Aging Research, and Director of the Harvard Neurodegeneration Training Program. Dr. Yankner graduated from Princeton University, received his M.D. and Ph.D. from Stanford University, and did a residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital. His work has advanced our understanding of the basic science of aging, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Down’s syndrome, and psychiatric disease beginning with the discovery that amyloid proteins are toxic molecules. His laboratory was the first to describe the transcriptome of the aging human brain, its evolution, and a role for DNA damage in gene regulation during aging. The Yankner laboratory has also contributed to our understanding of gene regulatory pathways that modulate aging, stress resistance, memory and Alzheimer’s disease. Recently, the Yankner laboratory discovered that lithium is an endogenous, biologically active element that may be involved in aging and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. He has received the Major Award for Medical Research from the Metropolitan Life Foundation, the Derek Denny-Brown Neurological Scholar Award from the American Neurological Association, the Irving S. Cooper Award from the Mayo Clinic, the Zenith Award from the Alzheimer’s Association, the Ellison Medical Foundation Senior Scholar Award, the Joseph A. Pignolo Award from the University of Pennsylvania, the Aging Mind Foundation Award, the Nathan W. Shock award from NIA, and the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award and Transformative Research Award.

This talk explores how brains learn unfamiliar musical structures using the Bohlen-Pierce scale—a tritave-based tuning system—as a culturally neutral research paradigm. By studying learners , this work reveals fundamental mechanisms of musical enculturation and lowers barriers to understanding how anyone can develop musical fluency.

Through EEG, MRI, and behavioral studies, I demonstrate that humans can rapidly learn to predict musical structure, and that liking emerges from learned predictions. Neural signatures reveal hierarchical predictive processing as the brain builds new expectations, with timbre serving as crucial scaffolding for learning novel pitch structures. Individual differences in musical training, amusia, and musical anhedonia illuminate dissociable systems underlying prediction versus reward. I extend these findings to understanding creativity and health applications, including studies in musical improvisation and imagination, attention enhancement in ADHD, and gamma-frequency stimulation for cognitive health in aging. Together these results illustrate how alternative tuning systems advance music technology to serve human health and creativity.

Speaker Bio:

Psyche Loui is Associate Professor of Creativity and Creative Practice and Associate Dean of Research for the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University. Her research expertise spans music cognition, neuroscience, and brain health, with a particular focus on understanding how musical experience shapes the brain across the lifespan. As director of the MIND (Music, Imaging, and Neural Dynamics) Lab, she investigates the neural mechanisms underlying musical perception, learning, and emotion. Her work bridges cognitive science, neuroscience, and the arts, examining questions from how we perceive musical structure to how music supports health and social bonding. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and Grammy Foundation. Her work advances our understanding of the impact of music on human cognition and society.

Title: The Combinatorics of Triangulations of Products of Two Simplices

Abstract: We study the combinatorial structure of triangulations of the Cartesian product of two standard simplices, a seemingly simple object that is deeply connected to many objects spanning across polyhedral geometry, tropical geometry, topology, algebraic geometry, and matroid theory. In the first part, we extend our current understanding in the case where one of the two simplices has dimension two or three. In the second part, we establish several new cryptomorphisms between triangulations and related objects, addressing some gaps in the current literature. Finally, we study a generalization where the triangulated polytope is a sub-polytope of the product of two simplices, and generalize the related combinatorial characterizations accordingly.

This exhibition draws on archival materials from the Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT (AKDC) to explore a century of cultural heritage preservation in Aleppo, Syria. It takes as its point of departure the work of Kamil al-Ghazzi (1853–1933), the pioneering Aleppine historian whose influential three-volume chronicle, Nahr al-Dhahab fī Tārīkh Ḥalab (The River of Gold in the History of Aleppo), was published between 1924 and 1926.

Ink, Stone, and Silver Light presents three modes of documentation—manuscript, built form, and photography—through which Aleppo’s urban memory has been recorded and preserved. Featuring figures such as Michel Écochard and Yasser Tabbaa alongside al-Ghazzi, the exhibition traces overlapping efforts to capture the spirit of a city shaped by commerce, craft, and coexistence. At a time when Syria again confronts upheaval and displacement, these archival fragments offer models for preserving the past while envisioning futures rooted in dignity, knowledge, and place.

Title: Probabilistically Checkable Proofs and Applications,

Abstract: Probabilistically Checkable Proofs (PCPs) are proof systems that allow a verifier to check the correctness of a proof by reading only a few locations — sometimes as few as two. Since their introduction in the 1990s, PCPs have become a central tool in theoretical computer science, with applications to areas such as hardness of approximation, coding theory, and cryptography.

In this talk, I will present several new developments in PCPs, including the first PCPs achieving nearly optimal alphabet–soundness tradeoff, yielding new hardness-of-approximation results, as well as the first 3-query low-soundness PCPs of proximity, which resolve a conjecture about local decoding from 2005.

Summary: The U.S. military's approach to accountability overemphasizes individual actions and decisions rather than institutional factors. As a result, this often leads to institutional failures of accountability through an insufficient acknowledgment of the military's role in poor outcomes, an inadequate investigation and assessment of institutional problems, and consequently, too little reform to address these issues. This paper offers a novel framework of institutional accountability and uses that to examine two contemporary cases: the U.S. military's failures in the war in Afghanistan and its struggle to meaningfully combat sexual assault and sexual harassment within the ranks.

Title: The higher Verlinde category Ver_4^+ and superLie theory in characteristic 2

Abstract: We develop representation theory of the simplest higher Verlinde category

in characteristic 2, Ver_4^+ . We consider two perspectives when studying this category. First, it is a nontrivial reduction of the category of supervector spaces to characteristic 2, hence

studying Lie theory in this category produces a notion of superLie theory in characteristic

2. From this perspective, we analyze supergroups, Lie superalgebras, and superpolynomial

functors in characteristic 2, and relate these to existing notions of Lie theory in characteristic

2. Second, the higher Verlinde categories are the conjectured analogs of supervector spaces

in characteristic p in Deligne’s theorem, which classifies all moderate growth symmetric

tensor categories in characteristic 0 as representation categories of affine supergroup schemes.

Benson, Etingof, and Ostrik conjectured that in characteristic p, one replaces supervector

spaces with the union of the higher Verlinde categories in characteristic p. Hence, it is

conjecturally sufficient to understand representation theory in the higher Verlinde categories

in order to characterize symmetric tensor categories of moderate growth, and we develop the

theory to do so in our category as a starting point for more general cases.

We first provide some background on symmetric tensor categories and define Ver_4^+ and

its objects of interest. We then define and study Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras in this

category, including classifying the low-dimensional Lie (super)algebras and relating them to

Lie superalgebras in characteristic 2. Finally, we discuss representation theory of general linear

groups in Ver_4^+ , classifying their irreducible representations and their irreducible polynomial

representations (hence also the simple polynomial functors in Ver_4^+) via a highest weight

theory.

Elias Zerhouni, M.D., is Professor Emeritus of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University, where he served as Chair of the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, Vice Dean for Research and Executive Vice Dean of the School of Medicine from 1996 to 2002 before his appointment as Director of the National Institutes of Health from 2002 to 2008. In that position he oversaw the NIH’s 27 Institutes and Centers with more than 18,000 employees and a budget of $29.5 billion (2008). Dr. Zerhouni also served as senior fellow to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation from 2009 to 2010 and senior advisor to the CEO of Sanofi. He subsequently served as President, Global Research & Development, and a member of the Executive Committee for Sanofi from January 2011 to July 2018. Dr. Zerhouni co-authored more than 200 publications and has founded or co-founded five start-up companies. He currently is Vice Chairman and President of OPKO Health.

In November 2009, President Obama appointed Dr. Zerhouni as one of the first presidential U.S. science envoys. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He received the prestigious Legion of Honor medal from the French National Order in 2008 and was elected in 2010 as a member of the French Academy of Medicine and appointed as Chair of Innovation at the College de France in 2011. Title: Haiman’s conjecture and the Springer correspondence

Abstract: A 1993 conjecture of Haiman predicts that when certain traces are evaluated on the Kazhdan–Lusztig basis of the Hecke algebra of a symmetric group, the nonzero coefficients of the resulting Laurent polynomials are positive and unimodal. The “312-avoiding” case is now known to be equivalent to a conjecture of Shareshian–Wachs about symmetric functions attached to unit interval graphs, which in turn refines a recently-proven conjecture of Stanley–Stembridge. Building on work of Abreu–Nigro, Brosnan–Hong–Lee, and others, we propose a uniform generalization of Haiman’s conjecture to all finite Weyl groups, answering a question Haiman posed in his paper. The new statement is an unexpected relationship between the monodromy of closed Lusztig varieties and character multiplicities appearing in the Springer correspondence. We provide a formula for the monodromy that allows the conjecture to be checked explicitly in CHEVIE.

Speakers will examine foundational and applied challenges in AI, including collective harms from individually beneficial systems, fairness-constrained machine learning for public policy, ethical computer vision, human-robot interaction, environmental forecasting, virtue-based AI policies in schools, and model verification—bridging technical advances with questions of accountability and social impact.

The symposium will also feature a SERC Scholars poster session showcasing student research from first-year undergraduates to PhD candidates. Poster topics will range from chatbot friends and risk-averse AI systems to the environmental impacts of AI, highlighting the breadth of emerging scholarship in ethical computing.

The symposium will conclude with a keynote address by Kleinberg, whose research explores networks, algorithms, and the social and information systems that underpin the Web and other online media.

This exhibition draws on archival materials from the Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT (AKDC) to explore a century of cultural heritage preservation in Aleppo, Syria. It takes as its point of departure the work of Kamil al-Ghazzi (1853–1933), the pioneering Aleppine historian whose influential three-volume chronicle, Nahr al-Dhahab fī Tārīkh Ḥalab (The River of Gold in the History of Aleppo), was published between 1924 and 1926.

Ink, Stone, and Silver Light presents three modes of documentation—manuscript, built form, and photography—through which Aleppo’s urban memory has been recorded and preserved. Featuring figures such as Michel Écochard and Yasser Tabbaa alongside al-Ghazzi, the exhibition traces overlapping efforts to capture the spirit of a city shaped by commerce, craft, and coexistence. At a time when Syria again confronts upheaval and displacement, these archival fragments offer models for preserving the past while envisioning futures rooted in dignity, knowledge, and place.

An Inexact Trust-Region Algorithm for Nonsmooth Risk-Averse PDE-Constrained Optimization

Abstract:

Many practical problems require the optimization of systems of PDEs with uncertain inputs such as noisy problem data, unknown operating conditions, and unverifiable modeling assumptions. In this talk, we formulate these problems as infinite-dimensional, risk-averse stochastic programs for which we minimize a quantification of risk associated with the system performance. For many popular risk measures, the resulting risk-averse objective function is not differentiable, significantly complicating the numerical solution of the optimization problem. Unfortunately, traditional methods for nonsmooth optimization converge slowly (e.g., sublinearly) and consequently are often intractable for problems in which the objective function and any derivative information is expensive to evaluate. To address this challenge, we introduce a novel trust-region algorithm for solving large-scale nonsmooth risk-averse optimization problems. This algorithm is motivated by the primal-dual risk minimization algorithm and employs smooth approximate risk measures at each iteration. In addition, this algorithm permits and rigorously controls inexact objective function value and derivative (when available) computations, enabling the use of inexpensive approximations such as adaptive discretizations. We discuss convergence of the algorithm under mild assumptions and demonstrate its efficiency on various examples from PDE-constrained optimization

Drew Kouri is a staff member in the Optimization and Uncertainty Quantification department at Sandia National Laboratories and his research focuses on the analysis and efficient numerical solution of large-scale PDE-constrained, nonsmooth, and stochastic optimization problems. Dr. Kouri was awarded the DOE Early Career Award in 2021. Dr. Kouri received his BS and MS in mathematics from Case Western Reserve University, and his MA and PhD in Computational and Applied Mathematics from Rice University. Before joining Sandia, Dr. Kouri was the J. H. Wilkinson Fellow at Argonne National Laboratory.

Title: Algorithmic Statistics and Trustworthy Machine Learning through a Cryptographic Lens

Abstract: This thesis defense establishes a cryptographic foundation for studying computational hardness in algorithmic statistics and its implications for trustworthiness in machine learning. On the algorithmic statistics side, we show that well-studied cryptographic assumptions imply surprising computational lower bounds for several problems: Gaussian mixture models, symmetric binary perceptrons, number partitioning, and dimensionality reduction. These assumptions underlie NIST’s post-quantum standardization efforts and can ultimately be based on the worst-case hardness of standard computational problems on integer lattices such as the shortest vector problem. On the machine learning side, we focus on adversarially robust dimensionality reduction and backdoors in models. For dimensionality reduction, we show that the Johnson-Lindenstrauss embedding itself already satisfies a form of adversarial robustness as a hash function. For backdoors, we study how cryptographic assumptions can be used to plant them and how random self-reducibility can be used to remove them.

Title: "Perverse coherent sheaves in representation theory"

Abstract:

A perverse coherent sheaf is a natural algebro-geometric concept arising in several core constructions related to geometric Langlands duality. However, some of the key tools developed for well-studied constructible perverse sheaves are not available in the coherent setting, thus the theory presents a new set of challenges. We develop the theory in three directions:

1. We study the coherent Satake category by relating it to the category of modules over the quantum affine group, and construct short exact sequences which conjecturally are categorical cluster mutations.

2. We define the non-commutative affine Schubert varieties and perversely-exotic t-structure on their resolutions in type A. We identify the corresponding basis of simples in equivariant K-theory with Lusztig's canonical basis for quantum affine groups. The proof goes by establishing properties of parabolic Bezrukavnikov equivalences.

3. We propose the notion of perverse coherent sheaves on symplectic singularities and study its properties. We demonstrate the way in which this construction generalizes the two previously studied instances of perverse-coherent t-structure.

Talk Title: Memory Across Time Scales

Abstract: How are transient stimuli converted into lasting internal representations? And are there unique strategies to achieve memory on different time scales. Our lab addresses these questions by bridging functional genomics with systems neuroscience to provide cross-disciplinary insights. On one hand, we perform genetic mapping in outbred mice for unbiased discovery of genes, cell types, and circuits relevant for memory maintenance. In parallel, we develop and apply methodologies to record and manipulate neural activity from relevant circuits in the behaving animal. In today’s talk, I will discuss molecular and neural circuit mechanisms that support memory maintenance over progressively longer time-scales.

Bio: Priya Rajasethupathy is currently the Jonathan M. Nelson Family Associate Professor and Head of Lab at the Rockefeller University. She obtained her BA from Cornell University, and an MD/PhD in Neuroscience from Columbia University, working with Eric Kandel. She did her post-doctoral work at Stanford University with Karl Deisseroth. Currently, at Rockefeller University, experiments in her lab are aimed at understanding genomic and neural computations that support memory. Priya is a Vallee, Searle, and Klingenstein Scholar and has been a recipient of an NIH New Innovator Award, Presidential Early Career Award, and the MIND Prize.

Title: Homological mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces

Abstract: Joint work in progress with Ailsa Keating. We prove the homological mirror symmetry conjecture of Kontsevich for K3 surfaces in the following form: Let $X$ be a K3 surface equipped with a Kahler form $\omega$ such that the lattice $L:=[\omega]^{\perp} \cap H^2(X,{\mathbb Z})$ has signature $(2,r-2)$ and contains a copy of the hyperbolic plane $U=\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}$. Then there is a projective K3 surface $Y$ defined over the Novikov field and a quasi-equivalence of $A_\infty$ categories between the Fukaya category of $(X,\omega)$ and the derived category of coherent sheaves on $Y$. We remark that the condition on the lattice $L$ is necessary (by considering numerical $K$-theory). Our work builds on prior work of Seidel, Gross--Siebert, Sheridan, Lekili--Ueda, and Ganatra--Pardon--Shende, among others.

She conducted original research in synthetic biology, microfluidics, and infectious disease while earning a PhD in biological engineering at MIT. She then taught at the University of California and Caltech before joining the U.S. Cycling National Team, where she won 11 National Championships and three World Cup medals. Now she is a NASA astronaut working to reach her highest goal – flying to the International Space Station and beyond.

David Chipperfield studied architecture at the Kingston School of Art and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. He worked for Douglas Stephen, Richard Rogers and Norman Foster before founding his own practice in 1985 and establishing a design methodology that is now used across five offices in London, Berlin, Milan, Shanghai and Santiago de Compostela.

David Chipperfield is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and an honorary fellow of both the American Institute of Architects and the Bund Deutscher Architekten. Among the accolades he has received are the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, awarded in 2009, and a knighthood for services to architecture in the UK and Germany, awarded in 2010. He has received the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture (2011) and the Praemium Imperiale from the Japan Art Association (2013), both given in recognition of a lifetime’s work. David Chipperfield was appointed a member of the Order of the UK's Companions of Honour in 2021, Commander of Spain's Orden de Isabel la Católica and member of Germany's Orden Pour le Mérite für Wissenschaften und Künste in 2022 for his services to architecture internationally. In 2023 he was selected Laureate for the Pritzker Architecture Prize.

In addition to design work, David Chipperfield has taught and lectured at schools of architecture worldwide. In 2012 he curated the 13th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale under the title 'Common Ground. He served as the mentor for architecture from 2016–17 for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. In 2017 he founded Fundación RIA, a private, non-profit entity that works towards meaningful economic, environmental and cultural development in Galicia, Spain.

David Chipperfield has published numerous books and articles, including 'On Planning – A Thought Experiment' (2018), a publication that explores and theorises the urban qualities of contemporary urban developments. He was the 2020 guest editor of Italian design magazine Domus.

Our season concludes back at MIT’s Tull Concert Hall with three contemporary gems and a Romantic masterwork. MIT faculty composer Keeril Makan shares a powerful meditation on the colorful Sanford Biggers sculpture, Madrigal, that greets us outside MIT’s new music building. The work cleverly takes advantage of the Hall’s unique configuration. Next, we present a wind quintet by the Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz, Puzzle-Tocas, in which the instruments of the quintet continually transform in color and dynamic. Wunlit, a solo work for horn by the Nigerian-American composer Shawn Okpebholo, is inspired by the village of Wunlit in South Sudan, site of the 1999 Peace Conference. The concert - and season - concludes with Robert Schumann’s exquisite quartet for piano and strings, inspired by his wife, the composer Clara, who was the pianist at its premiere in 1844.

About the Performers

Olivia Beniston is a graduate student earning her Masters in Chemical Engineering Practice. She previously obtained her B.S. in Chemical-Biological Engineering at MIT. She has studied piano with Eileen Huang in the Emerson Scholar Program for the past five years, and has performed works by Brahms, Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Debussy and Ravel. In addition to her studies, she played piano for the MIT Symphony Orchestra and is active in the Chamber Music Society.Olivia began studying piano at age 8 with Jill Telesco and continued studying with her throughout middle school and high school. She was also highly involved with music in her high school, performing violin with their Symphonic and Chamber Orchestras and serving as the school’s concert accompanist all four years. She has competed and won prizes at the Young Musicians Festival, The Schubert Club of Fairfield, the Crescendo Competition, and has performed at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall. She furthered her devotion to music at the Royal Conservatory of Music, receiving top marks in her level 10 performance, history, and harmony and counterpoint exams.Olivia will be wrapping up her time at MIT in the fall, where she will complete practice school at various industries. In her free time, Olivia enjoys completing puzzle books, planning events, and exploring Boston.

Sophia Cai is a senior at MIT majoring in computer science and molecular biology and minoring in music. She started flute at the age of ten and currently studies with Sue-Ellen Hershman-Tcherepnin through the MIT Emerson/Harris Scholarship program, having previously studied with Diane Horban and Hideko Amano of the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory. At MIT, Sophia has been part of the MIT Symphony Orchestra and the Institooters, MIT’s IAP flute ensemble. In the past, she has been a member of the Illinois Music Education Association All-State Band. Outside of music, Sophia conducts biomedical research in the Koch Institute and enjoys reading and writing.

The MIT Chamber Chorus, led by Ryan Turner, is a small student group that performs two concerts each year. Designed for the more vocally and musically advanced singer, this select ensemble is challenged with a wide variety of repertoire including music for a cappella chorus as well as choral works accompanied by small ensembles, or piano. This exhibition draws on archival materials from the Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT (AKDC) to explore a century of cultural heritage preservation in Aleppo, Syria. It takes as its point of departure the work of Kamil al-Ghazzi (1853–1933), the pioneering Aleppine historian whose influential three-volume chronicle, Nahr al-Dhahab fī Tārīkh Ḥalab (The River of Gold in the History of Aleppo), was published between 1924 and 1926.

Ink, Stone, and Silver Light presents three modes of documentation—manuscript, built form, and photography—through which Aleppo’s urban memory has been recorded and preserved. Featuring figures such as Michel Écochard and Yasser Tabbaa alongside al-Ghazzi, the exhibition traces overlapping efforts to capture the spirit of a city shaped by commerce, craft, and coexistence. At a time when Syria again confronts upheaval and displacement, these archival fragments offer models for preserving the past while envisioning futures rooted in dignity, knowledge, and place.

Christina L. Davis is the Edwin O. Reischauer Professor of Japanese Politics in the Department of Government and Director of the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations at Harvard University. She studies the politics and foreign policy of Japan, East Asia, and international organizations with a focus on trade policy. She is the author of Discriminatory Clubs: The Geopolitics of International Organizations (Princeton University Press, 2023) and Why Adjudicate? Enforcing Trade Rules in the WTO (Princeton University Press, 2012), as well as numerous other publications in leading journals.

undergraduate mathematics and data science at Youngstown State through

People simultaneously associate plastics with both waste in the form of massive landfill requirements and a tendency to escape into sensitive ecosystems—and as a potential solution to energy and climate crises in the form of cheap, lightweight, safe batteries and other energy devices. In both cases, one attribute of polymers is simultaneously its greatest flaw and a tremendous opportunity in terms of improved performance: processibility. The inability to recycle plastics is at least partly rooted in the array of chemically dissimilar commodity plastics on the market and our inability to recycle such a mixed stream.

In this talk, Rachel Segalman of the University of California, Santa Barbara, will demonstrate the tremendous utility of electrostatic interactions in reducing the potential environmental impacts of plastics. For example, her group has recently demonstrated that incorporating even a single charged group per polymer chain causes highly immiscible polymers to form homogeneous blends with high mechanical strength. Similar electrostatic attractions are so strong as to force conjugated (conducting) polymers to form high solids loading solutions that have shown great utility as battery binders.

Abstract: I will discuss a microlocal analysis approach to spectral theory on asymptotically Minkowski spaces both for scalar wave operators and also for Dirac type operators. This in turn gives rise to complex powers of the operators, allowing for the analysis of a spectral zeta function, relating its residues to geometric information. This is joint work with Nguyen Viet Dang and Michal Wrochna, with ongoing work on extensions also with Mikhail Molodyk.

ABSTRACT: Polypeptoids are non-natural, sequence specific polymers that offer the opportunity to probe the effect of monomer sequence, charge, chirality, and chain shape on self-assembly and surface properties. Although examples of hierarchical polypeptide structures abound in nature, the de novo design of such systems for specific functions is still a major challenge. The polypeptoid system with its much simplified set of inter and intramolecular interactions provides an opportunity to explore this design space with more tractable systems. In this talk, I will discuss experimental efforts to design peptoid structures with controlled chain shape on a fundamental level as well as use of this platform to design highly functional materials ranging from marine anti-fouling coatings to next-generation EUV lithography photoresists.

Join us for a conversation with the scholars who created Refusing Generative AI in Writing Studies. The speakers will share how and why they decided to create Refusing GenAI in Writing Studies as well as its impact as a rhetorical intervention. In addition, they will address stock arguments in support of generative AI adoption in the classroom before offering some practical teaching strategies for negotiating some of the challenges that generative AI poses for education, particularly writing education. Teachers from all disciplines who assign writing, who are interested in learning about diverse perspectives on generative AI in higher education, and who are interested in resisting Big Tech’s incursion in higher education may benefit from attending this teaching talk.

Jennifer Sano-Franchini (she, her) is the Gaziano Family Legacy Professor of Rhetoric and Writing Studies and an associate professor of English at West Virginia University where she teaches courses on professional writing theory, multimedia writing, and cultural rhetorics. She serves as Immediate Past Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication.

Megan McIntyre (she/her) is the Director of the Program in Rhetoric and Composition and an assistant professor at the University of Arkansas, where she teaches courses on writing pedagogy, research methods, and digital rhetorics. Her most recent work has appeared in Computers and Composition, Composition Forum, Peitho, and The Journal of Writing Assessment.

Maggie Fernandes (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Rhetoric and Composition at the University of Arkansas. Her scholarly expertise is in digital/cultural rhetorics, writing assessment, institutional oppression, and user experience design. Her work is published and forthcoming in journals such as Computers and Composition, Composition Studies, Enculturation, Peitho, Kairos, among others.

How computing is changing critical mineral exploration

Abstract:

The energy transition through increased electrification has put the world’s attention on critical mineral exploration. Despite the promise of a growing the demand, the global exploration industry is money-losing enterprise. Even with increased investments a decrease in new discoveries has taken place over the last two decades. In this presentation, I propose a solution to this problem where AI and computational approaches is implemented as the enabler of a rigorous scientific method for mineral exploration that aims to reduce cognitive bias & false positives, enhances the role of domain experts and drive down the cost of exploration. The current organization of exploration activities involving many fields of science (geology, geochemistry, geophysics) is no longer an effective in discovering deposits under cover. In particular, the current approach fails to adequately quantify uncertainty, leading to sub-optimal decision-making and $ spent on drilling that are often false positives. Instead, I propose a new scientific method that is based on a philosophical approach founded on the principles of Bayesianism and falsification. In this approach, data acquisition is in the first place seen as a means to falsify human-generated hypothesis. Decision of what data to acquire next is quantified with verifiable metrics and based on rational decision making. However, in order to implement these approaches, I will show that high-performance computing, completely absent in exploration today, is essential. A practical compute platform is provided that can be used as a template in any exploration campaign. More specifically computing will be needed for 1) novel unsupervised learning methods that collaborate with domain experts to better understand massive geoscientific data and generate multiple competing geological hypotheses and 2) human-in-the-loop AI algorithms that can optimally plan various geological, geophysical, geochemical and drilling data acquisition where uncertainty reduction of geological hypothesis precedes the uncertainty reduction on grade and tonnage. I will show how this approach has led to one of the largest copper discovery this century in Zambia.

Bio:

Jef Caers received both an MSc (’93) in mining engineering / geophysics and a PhD (’97) in mining engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Currently, he is Professor of Earth and Planetary at Stanford University. Jef Caers has pioneered research on data science, artificial intelligence and decision making under uncertainty in developing Earth resources. As the founder of Stanford Mineral-X, Prof. Caers collaborates with the mineral exploration industry to reduce cost and improve discovery. Jef Caers has authored six books on data science and decision making that blend academic rigor with practical industrial applications. He was awarded the Krumbein Medal of the International Association of Mathematical Geosciences for his career achievement.

Talk Title: Strategies and Molecular Mechanisms Regulating Brain Wiring

Abstract: Neural circuits form in two general developmental epochs. Genetically hardwired programs specify patterns of connectivity during early development. At later stages of circuit assembly, genetic programs and experience come together to modify these patterns. By bringing together genetics, biochemistry, EM-based connectomics, single-cell mRNA sequencing, physiology and behavior, we have gained insights into the genetically hardwired cellular recognition mechanisms underlying circuit formation through studies of the Drosophila visual system. Immunoglobulin superfamily proteins play a prominent in role in regulating specificity in this system. This includes a vast array of thousands of proteins regulating self-non-self recognition and self-avoidance through homophilic binding, pairing of synaptic partners through matched expression of families of heterophilic recognition molecules on pre and post-synaptic neurons , and gradients of recognition molecules forming gradients of synaptic inputs and outputs. These gradients emerge from continua of cell types similar to continua of excitatory neurons in the mammalian brain. This raises the intriguing question of whether similar gradients of cell recognition molecules expressed in neurons across cortical depth regulate synaptic circuitry.

Bio: S. Lawrence (Larry) Zipursky is the Jerome J. Belzer Chair of Medical Research, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biological Chemistry (Active), Investigator Emeritus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. Zipursky and his colleagues have established principles of neural development and their underlying molecular mechanisms. Their studies have provided insights into mechanisms of neural tissue specification, neuronal cell fate determination, pattern formation, mechanisms regulating synaptic connectivity and how postnatal experience influences neural circuit assembly. Zipursky is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Title: Foundation neural operators and diffusion models over function spaces

Abstract: Deep neural operators have emerged as a powerful paradigm in scientific machine learning (SciML) for learning nonlinear mappings between function spaces arising in complex dynamical systems. In this talk, I will introduce the deep operator network (DeepONet) and its extensions, such as geometry-dependent/manifold operator learning, and demonstrate their effectiveness on diverse multiphysics and multiscale 3D problems, such as geological carbon sequestration, fire simulation, full waveform inversion, and topology optimization. I will then present the first operator learning method requiring only a single PDE solution, i.e., one-shot learning, enabled by a new concept of local solution operator motivated by the locality of physics. Moreover, I will discuss our recent work on diffusion models, including FunDiff as a novel framework of diffusion models over function spaces for physics-informed generative modeling, and RED-DiffEq which leverages denoising diffusion models as regularization for inverse PDE problems. Finally, I will present a physics-informed multimodal foundation model for PDEs and neural-operator element method (an efficient and scalable finite element method enabled by reusable neural operators).

About the Performers

Catherine Kung is a senior at MIT majoring in biological engineering and computation & cognition. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, she began playing the violin at age six and studied with Professor Jenny Grégoire. She currently studies with Sarita Uranovsky through the Emerson/Harris Program (E/HP) at MIT. Previously, she was a member of the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra and All-State Orchestra for several years, performed solo at Carnegie Hall, was the state winner of the MTNA Competition, and led her high school’s chamber music student group. She has been part of E/HP and the Chamber Music Society since Fall 2022, and outside of classes, she enjoys exploring Boston and watching movies with friends. After graduation, Catherine plans to pursue a PhD in medical engineering.

Abstract:

Synthetic dense membranes with pores at the sub-nanometre scale are at the core of processes for separating solutes from water, such as water purification and desalination. While these membrane processes have achieved substantial industrial success, the capability of state-of-the-art membranes to achieve high selectivity between solutes is limited. Such high-precision separation would enable fit-for-purpose treatment, improving the sustainability of current water-treatment processes and opening doors for new applications of membrane technologies. In this talk, I will first introduce the challenges of state-of-the-art membranes to achieve high selectivity between solutes. I will then introduce our current attempts to promote solute-solute selectivity in membrane separation using improved process and membrane design, which are inspired by our recent insights into the selectivity mechanisms in dense membranes.

Biography:

Razi Epsztein is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. He received his BSc and MSc degrees from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and his PhD from the Technion, followed by postdoctoral training with Prof. Menachem Elimelech at Yale University. His research focuses on membrane-based processes for water and wastewater treatment, emphasizing the fundamental mechanisms governing molecular transport and selectivity in membranes and nanopores. Building on these insights, his group develops advanced membranes and separation processes with enhanced ion selectivity, including ion-specific membranes that recognize target ions through tailored binding sites and molecular interactions. Prof. Epsztein serves on the Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T) Early Career Editorial Advisory Board and has received several prestigious honors, including the 2025 James J. Morgan Early Career Award from the ACS Division of Environmental Chemistry (ENVR) and the ES&T Super Reviewer Award.

It takes as its point of departure the work of Kamil al-Ghazzi (1853–1933), the pioneering Aleppine historian whose influential three-volume chronicle, Nahr al-Dhahab fī Tārīkh Ḥalab (The River of Gold in the History of Aleppo), was published between 1924 and 1926.

Ink, Stone, and Silver Light presents three modes of documentation—manuscript, built form, and photography—through which Aleppo’s urban memory has been recorded and preserved. Title: Combinatorial Invariants of Stratified Spaces

Abstract: We construct a Grothendieck ring for poset-stratified spaces and use it to compute the topological Euler characteristic of a number of constructions in topology and geometry. This ring is defined on a suitable essentially small subcategory of Top and offers a flexible real analog of the Grothendieck ring of varieties in algebraic geometry. A number of applications are given to orbifolds and to spaces stratified by configuration spaces, like chromatic configuration spaces, bounded multiplicity configurations or finite subset spaces.

Title: Gibbs measures as local equilibrium Kubo-Martin-Schwinger states for focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations

Abstract: Gibbs measures for nonlinear dispersive PDEs have been used as a fundamental tool in the study of low-regularity almost sure global well-posedness of the associated Cauchy problem following the pioneering work of Bourgain in the 1990s. In the first part of the talk, we will discuss the connection of Gibbs measures with the classical Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) condition. The latter is a property characterizing equilibrium measures of the Liouville equation. In particular, we show that Gibbs measures are the unique KMS equilibrium states for a wide class of Hamiltonian PDEs, including nonlinear Schrödinger equations with defocusing interactions. Our proof is based on Malliavin calculus and Gross-Sobolev spaces. This is joint work with Zied Ammari.

In the second part of the talk, we study (local) Gibbs measures for focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations. These measures have to be localized by a truncation in the mass in one dimension and in the Wick-ordered (renormalized) mass in dimensions two and three. We show that local Gibbs measures correspond to suitably localized KMS states.

It takes as its point of departure the work of Kamil al-Ghazzi (1853–1933), the pioneering Aleppine historian whose influential three-volume chronicle, Nahr al-Dhahab fī Tārīkh Ḥalab (The River of Gold in the History of Aleppo), was published between 1924 and 1926.

Talk title: Development and Evolution of Human Cognitive Networks

Abstract: The extraordinary capabilities of the cerebral cortex are central to the biological basis of human uniqueness. A defining organizational principle is the sensorimotor-to-association (S–A) axis, which extends from modality-specific primary sensorimotor areas to transmodal regions that form distributed association networks supporting high-level cognition. Although conserved across mammals, this axis has been extensively remodeled in humans, characterized by a disproportionate expansion of association networks. In this presentation, I will highlight recent findings on the molecular and cellular mechanisms shaping the development and evolution of the cortical S–A axis. I will focus specifically on the prefrontal cortex and broader association networks, their evolutionary specializations, and why these expanded structures are preferentially affected in neurological and psychiatric disorders that impair cognition.

This event brings together leading researchers to explore how neural structure and function emerge during development. Speakers will discuss key theoretical and empirical challenges in explaining how complex neural systems arise across molecular, cellular, and circuit levels.

The K. Lisa Yang Integrative Computational Neuroscience (ICoN) Center at MIT pioneers computational models of brain function that unify multiple levels of biological data, from molecules to circuits to behavior. The center is part of the Yang Tan Collective, a multi-university effort dedicated to accelerating collaborations in basic science, research, and engineering to improve human health and well-being at a global scale. This exhibition draws on archival materials from the Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT (AKDC) to explore a century of cultural heritage preservation in Aleppo, Syria. It takes as its point of departure the work of Kamil al-Ghazzi (1853–1933), the pioneering Aleppine historian whose influential three-volume chronicle, Nahr al-Dhahab fī Tārīkh Ḥalab (The River of Gold in the History of Aleppo), was published between 1924 and 1926.

Ink, Stone, and Silver Light presents three modes of documentation—manuscript, built form, and photography—through which Aleppo’s urban memory has been recorded and preserved. Featuring figures such as Michel Écochard and Yasser Tabbaa alongside al-Ghazzi, the exhibition traces overlapping efforts to capture the spirit of a city shaped by commerce, craft, and coexistence. At a time when Syria again confronts upheaval and displacement, these archival fragments offer models for preserving the past while envisioning futures rooted in dignity, knowledge, and place.
