About this Event
MIT Room W20-549 77 Massachusetts Avenue
https://forms.gle/vWizx79uT7uKXUQw8Over three IAP evenings, participants will create felt hats using vintage (and very cool!) hat blocks - stretching the felt hoods into shape using the traditional technique of applying steam/water and a lot of tugging and pinning.
In class one, we will learn about hat blocking and block one felt form each.
in class two, we'll remove the shaped felt and begin developing individual designs with additional shaping, wiring, hatbands, etc.
Class three will be for finishing work with the option to block an additional shape to be completed in the students' own time.
Free YouTube tutorials will be assigned before each class so we can focus class time on the hands-on business of hat making.
Open to MIT community members who'd like to make a felt hat for daily wear, special events, or for costuming. Expenses for one hat per participant will be covered. Please note - all the hat blocks we'll be using are in vintage women's styles and average women's head size or are perchers that sit quite high on the head.
This class is now waitlisted - complete this form to put your name on the waitlist and receive advance notice about future classes
