Strengthen Community Relationships and Foster a Love of Reading.

If you could pick one book to recommend to someone at MIT, what would you choose?

Back in January 2020, we asked this question and collected hundreds of recommended favorite books from MIT community members for the MIT (Mysterious) Book Exchange! This event, led by an MIT graduate student, aims to strengthen community relationships and foster a love of reading.

More than a year after postponing our event, we invite you to join us in person at the newly opened Hayden Library Courtyard (Building 14) and pick up one of these cherished books that was recommended by MIT students, colleagues, and friends. Thanks to donations from recommenders and generous support from the MIT Graduate Student Council and MindHandHeart, you’ll be able to take a recommended book home with you for free!

But there’s a twist: All the books will be wrapped and organized by genre, with only the recommendations written by community members printed and shown on the books.  Attendees will select books based solely on the genre and recommendation!  You’ll walk away with a mysterious new treasure to brighten your day!

In collaboration with our partners at LIT@MIT and the MIT Libraries, we are hosting the MIT (Mysterious) Book Exchange onWednesday, November 10th, from 9:00am to 5:00pm in the Building 14 Courtyard. We hope you’ll join us and celebrate receiving one of your fellow MITer’s favorite books of all time!

In case of rain, the event will be held inside, in The Nexus (14S-130) at Hayden Library.

Reminder: This event is for members of the MIT Community only, and all attendees of this event will need to be in COVID Pass or have a Tim Ticket to access the event.

If you were not able to attend the event, you can view the full list of recommended books at!

Special thanks to the Community Service Office, the MIT Libraries, and LIT@MIT for organizing this event. And special thanks as well to MindHandHeart and the GSC for funding this event.
