 this event is now beginning at 11am\n\nAbstract:\n\nThis talk will examine 
 some of the features of the last decade in Europe\, which has been marked b
 y political shifts to the far right\, a magnified profile of refugee migrat
 ion into and within Europe\, and an increased articulation of the links bet
 ween race\, real and imagined borders\, and the treatment of refugees. The 
 talk will examine laws\, policies and public discourse from several Europea
 n countries and from European regional institutions.\n\nAbout the speaker:\
 n\nDr Eddie Bruce-Jones joined the faculty at Birkbeck in September 2010.  
 He has served as Deputy Dean of the School of Law since 2018 and Head of th
 e Department of Law since 2020.  During his time at Birkbeck\, he has serve
 d as the school’s Acting Dean (Autumn 2018)\, Assistant Dean for Recruitmen
 t and Internationalisation (2015–2018)\, Programme Director for the LLM Qua
 lifying Law Degree (2013–2018) and as a member of the college Board of Gove
 rnors (2015–2018).  Prior to joining Birkbeck\, Dr Bruce-Jones was Visiting
  Lecturer in Public International Law at King’s College London School of La
 w and an associate at the city law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton\, 
 LLP in London\, where in addition to corporate practice\, he handled severa
 l asylum and public international law pro bono matters.\n\nIn 2020\, Dr Bru
 ce-Jones was the William and Patricia Kleh Visiting Professor at Boston Uni
 versity School of Law.  He is the recipient of a 2018 Wellcome Trust ISSF g
 rant to support a symposium in the area of the medical humanities\, on race
 \, mental health and state violence.  In 2017 and 2018\, he was a short-sta
 y visiting fellow at the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History in
  Frankfurt\, Germany.  He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal
  of Immigration\, Asylum and Nationality Law (Bloomsbury) and an advisory b
 oard member of the London Journal of Critical Thought\, the International A
 cademic Forum and the Centre for Intersectional Justice.\n\nDr Bruce-Jones 
 serves on the Boards of Directors of the Institute for Race Relations and t
 he UK Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group\, and the Advisory Board of the Cen
 tre for Intersectional Justice (Berlin). He is a comparative law specialist
  for the Independent Commission on the Death of Oury Jalloh (on police brut
 ality and due process) in Germany as well as Sexuality and Gender Identity 
 Resource Co-ordinator for the Refugees in Exile Programme of the Internatio
 nal Refugee Rights Initiative. He has taught general education and writing 
 courses in prisons in Boston and New York and has worked on prison reform i
 ssues in various capacities.\n\nDr Bruce-Jones is Associate Academic Fellow
  of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple and Member of the New York S
