Publishing the results of one’s research is an integral part of the scientific process, yet scholarly journals are often seen as black boxes by researchers. What happens to a paper after it is submitted? Who is deciding on its fate? What is the role of the journal editor and the editorial office? How does the peer-review process work, and are its core principles still relevant in today’s changing publishing landscape? In this talk I will discuss these questions in an attempt to de-mystify the peer review process from an editor's perspective, and provide advice for getting your manuscript published as quickly as possible. The presentation will cover the hows and whys of peer review, what editors and reviewers look for in submissions, how decisions are made and the best ways of responding, and if appealing a negative decision is ever a good idea.  This CAPD event is open to MIT undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and alumni. Registration requested via Careerbridge (powered by Handshake).

 Dr. Matteo Cavalleri

 Matteo (@physicsteo on twitter) studied Chemistry at the University of Milan (Italy) and University of Valencia (Spain) before obtaining his Ph.D. in the Quantum Chemistry group of the Physics Department at Stockholm University (Sweden) with a thesis entitled “Local Structure of Hydrogen Bonded Liquids”. After a 3 years’ experience at the Theory Department of the Fritz-Haber-Institut in Berlin (Germany) as an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral research fellow, he joined Wiley in August 2008 as an Editor of physica status solidi. He become the Editor-in-Chief of Int. Journal of Quantum Chemistry in October 2011, and of Advanced Quantum Technologies in 2020. Matteo is also Publisher of the Materials Science and Physics US-based journal portfolio of Wiley.
