Join MIT's Nuclear Reactor Lab for an hour-long presentation by Prof. Markus Strobl (Paul Scherrer Institute) to learn about ways neutron imaging is actively being used for nuclear and non-nuclear applications, such as nuclear safety, additive manufactive, and battery research. Advanced neutron imaging and applications in energy, additive manufacturing and nuclear safety

Abstract
Neutron imaging advanced significantly over the past two decades offering techniques that go beyond traditional attenuation contrast imaging [1]. Diffraction, scattering and polarization-based methods allow for novel observations of crystallographic features, nano-scale phenomena and magnetic structures with spatial resolution reaching below 10 micrometers. These developments have been driven by specific applications, e.g. in energy research, including nuclear energy and additive manufacturing (AM). Examples will be presented of applications of novel neutron imaging techniques in battery research, metal AM, and nuclear safety. High spatial resolution is used to study hydrogen and hydride morphologies in spent fuel claddings, and operando studies provide insights into phase transformations during the selective laser melting of bimetal mixtures and battery charge/discharge cycles.
