Big data, AI, and tech platforms have faced mounting criticism over biased algorithms, nonconsensual data collection, and discriminatory impacts. How, then, can those of us who work with data science and AI use these tools in the service of equity, justice, and liberation? Catherine D’Ignazio, a self-described hacker mama, makes the case that data scientists and researchers can learn from the citizen data science practices of a group of grassroots activists challenging gender-related violence against women and girls across the Americas. Drawing from the Data Against Feminicide project, D’Ignazio will describe approaches to data science that center care, memory, and justice.
