All Majors Estimathon
Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 5:30pm to 7:00pm
MIT Media Lab , 6th Floor 75 Amhest Street, Cambridge MA, 02129
Jane Street would like to invite you to attend our All Majors Estimathon™ at MIT on Wednesday, November 16th @ 5:30pm! At this event, we’re particularly excited to meet students studying biology, chemistry, physics, linguistics, statistics, economics, and other sciences and liberal arts who may be less familiar with Jane Street and what we do. Come play and hear Streeters with diverse academic backgrounds talk about their pathway to Jane Street.
As a quantitative trading firm, we value problem-solving, quantitative reasoning, and creative collaboration. While our industry traditionally attracts people from backgrounds like math, computer science, and finance, we know that these skills are developed across all different fields within science and the liberal arts. This event is an opportunity for these students to learn more about us.
Following the Estimathon, we will host a panel featuring Streeters from differentiated STEM backgrounds who will tell you about their academic paths, how they ended up at Jane Street, and how they use their skill sets in their work every day. Food and swag will be provided!
To help us assess catering and swag needs, register yourself (and friends) here by Tuesday, November 15th at 11:59pm ET.
Please note: This event and its content are intended for students outside of the Math and Computer Science Departments.
The Estimathon is a mind bending mixture of logic and trivia. In teams, you'll attempt 13 Fermi problems in 30 minutes. Be prepared to come up with the best set of confidence intervals! Sample problems include:
How many breaths does the average U.S adult take in a lifetime?
What is the mass of the earth in tons?
How many paper bags are made from 14 million trees?
