  varieties of Whittaker type\n\nAbstract:\n\nIn this talk I will discuss a
  special category of spherical varieties whose $L^2$ space is exactly supp
 orted on all the tempered generic representations. Then I will give two fa
 milies of examples\, one from the theory of double flag varieties\, and th
 e other one from the theory of Rankin-Selberg integrals. I will also expla
 in how to use this theory to prove the local funcational equations for som
 e Rankin-Selberg integrals. This is an ongoing joint work with Lei Zhang.
