Title: Adaptive materials inspired by cephalopods: From molecules to machines
Abstract: We are developing systems, structures, and machines that can perform complex tasks or exhibit intelligence in response to external stimuli all using bio-inspired materials. Inspired by systems spanning from how tissues build themselves to how animals camouflage, I will discuss our molecular-level approach to building new materials that can produce controllable transformations in response to specific chemical inputs for applications ranging from colorimetric sensors to implantable electronics.
Leila is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Northeastern University and co-Founder of a startup, Seaspire Skincare. At Northeastern, Leila leads the Biomaterials Design Group—a multidisciplinary team that studies adaptive color in nature and uses their design principles as inspiration to build materials (i.e., paints, cosmetics, displays, and sensors). At Seaspire, she leads the technology development operations which include bringing to market a new line of cephalopod-inspired ingredients that are safe and effective for all people and the environment.
Leila is an Alabama native. Before she started her independent faculty career, Leila received her BS in Chemistry at the University of Alabama, and her Ph.D. in Chemistry at Vanderbilt University. She subsequently completed her postdoc in Bioengineering at Harvard University.
