Abstract:  

Ever since my PhD at Penn 40 years ago I had dreamt of setting up a similar style of PhD in the UK to attract mathematically-oriented physicists and engineers into theory and simulation of materials (TSM). In 2008 the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council put out a call for Centers for Doctoral Training (CDTs), and I spent the summer putting together the most ambitious proposal of my career. The proposal was successful and in 2009 we started to turn my dream into reality.

This presentation will review the goals we set for this center and our students—personal development, teaching, research, academic collaboration, industrial engagement, and governance of the center—and how we achieved those goals. I will also try to present an objective assessment of the impact of the center.
