Most accounts of deep learning and related technologies focus on system architecture and behavior.  Professor Brian Cantwell Smith '74, SM '78, PhD '82 believes the successes of these systems also shed light on the underlying nature of the world.  In this talk he will draw metaphysical and ontological morals from second-wave AI, and explore their epistemological implications -- including the challenges they raise to the notion of “clear and distinct ideas.”

Brian Cantwell Smith '74, SM '78, PhD '82 is Reid Hoffman Professor of Artificial Intelligence and the Human at the University of Toronto, where he is also professor of information, philosophy, cognitive science, and the history and philosophy of science and technology. Professor Smith is the author of On the Origin of Objects.
