About this Event
222 MEMORIAL DR, Cambridge, MA 02139
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Collaborative (DMSE-DEIC) in collaboration with the MIT Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Visiting Scholars and Professors Program and the Institute for Community and Equity Office (ICEO) welcomes you to the award-winning documentary film screening of Far East Deep South, followed by a discussion with one of the star’s of the film and co-producer Baldwin Chiu.
This film is a powerful story of belonging, migration, untold narratives, interracial solidarity, and rediscovering roots in unlikely places, through a family’s story of Chinese immigration in the Mississippi Delta in the early 20th century during the Jim Crow and Chinese Exclusion era. Situated in a region and time period critical to understanding the complexity of industrial environmental pollutants, air and water contamination, this film provides an understanding of the diverse interconnected social, economic and cultural experiences of different racial and ethnic groups.
There will be a reception with light refreshments following the discussion.
This event is free and open to the public.
