DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: Yair Shenfeld (MIT)\n\nTitle: The extremal st
ructures of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality: convex polytopes and beyond
.\n\nAbstract:\nSolutions to classical geometric variational problems are
often unique and nice: the ball is the only chape which minimizes surface
area among shapes of equal volume. But the solutions to the variational pr
oblems of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities are conjectured to be non-un
ique and wild. I will talk about these variational problems\, including th
eir connections to areas outsite of convexity such as analysis and combina
torics\, and how we resolved some of their conjectured (due to R. Schneide
 r) solutions. Joint work with Ramon van Handel.\n\nSeminar Covid Statement
\nA notice to non-MIT seminar participants: at this time\, not all seminar
s are open to the general public\, and access to the MIT campus is highly
regulated. Please check the seminar webpage or with the event organizer an
d confirm whether the seminar you'd like to attend is open to non-MIT (i.e
. without CovidPass) attendees.\nSome seminars may offer a Zoom option for
off-campus participants.\nTo access MIT buildings for a math seminar with
out MIT's CovidPass\, you must be invited via a Tim Ticket ahead of time.
There are no exceptions\; please make sure to plan accordingly before comi
ng to campus. To be able to activate the Tim Ticket\, the attendee will ne
ed to submit an attestation about vaccination and health status and provid
 e contact info.\nFinally\, a reminder to all in-person participants. MIT C
ovid policies must be adhered to: remember to keep your mask on while insi
de buildings\, eating food is not allowed within lecture rooms\, and if yo
u are feeling sick on the day of the talk\, please stay home!
