The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) was created by Congress in 1863 to charter national banks; oversee a nationwide system of banking institutions; and ensure national banks are safe and sound, competitive and profitable, and capable of serving in the best possible manner the banking needs of their customers. As of September 30, 2019, the OCC supervised 840 national bank charters, 57 federal branches and agencies, and 303 federal savings associations. In total, the OCC supervises approximately $12.8 trillion in financial institution assets.
