Thursday, August 12, 2021 at 1:00pm to 2:00pm
Virtual EventJoin us via Zoom on 12 August at 1:00 pm for a 70th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture titled “Lessons from an Anti-Feminist Virus,” presented by Dr. Paula Johnson.
Johnson (MD, MPH) is a cardiologist and an internationally recognized researcher, educator, and expert on public health and health policy who is dedicated to advancing the health, education, and well-being of women around the world. Johnson spent much of her career at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where she founded the Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology. She was the Grayce A. Young Family Professor of Medicine in Women’s Health at Harvard Medical School, as well as professor of epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She now serves as the 14th president of Wellesley College.
In this lecture, President Johnson will discuss the glaring inequities in American society revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic, as over a million women with school-aged children have been forced out of the workplace, and Blacks and Hispanics have died in grossly disproportionate numbers. She will also discuss why sex and race/ethnicity are crucial considerations for advancing not only medical science and public health but also engineering and design. In addition, she will consider ways that academic scientists, engineers, and physicians — by insisting on these considerations — can help to build a better post-pandemic world.
