DESCRIPTION:The Women's & Gender Studies presents the first academic talk o
f the year-long Articulating Abortion series. To begin\, Professor Bertha
Manninen will be joining us to defend a pro-choice perspective using both
utilitarian and Kantian considerations. Additionally\, she will also argue
that there are some pro-life concerns that pro-choice advocates should ta
ke seriously\, and she hopes such conversation can pave the way for some t
ype of convergence between the two sides. \n\nBertha Alvarez Manninen is a
professor of philosophy at Arizona State University. Her main areas of re
search and teaching include bioethics\, applied ethics\, philosophy of rel
 igion\, philosophy and film\, and social/political philosophy.\n\nThis eve
