Mentoring is at the heart of much of our work here at MIT, yet, as with many skillsets one assumes students gain in grad school, we often don’t provide explicit instruction in it. This non-credit class, offered through the UROP Office and Fusion and Fission Undergraduate Scholars and aimed at grad students, postdocs, and research scientists, will help participants learn how to become better mentors.
The class is based on “Entering Mentoring,” evidence-based curriculum developed by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER), with additional training focused on MIT-specific needs. Participants will not be expected to do any reading outside of in-person classes. Classes will focus on group conversations about materials distributed there. Participants will walk away with concrete examples of materials they can use with their mentee. The timing of the class allows for UROP Direct Supervisors to “hit the ground” running with spring UROPs.
Not only will participants learn strategies for working with undergraduate researchers, they will also build relationships with other mentors, creating a “community of practice.” By building time into the schedule for informal conversation over lunch, the program fosters the building of relationships among graduate students and postdocs across departmental lines. These relationships will be beneficial to mentors down the line when they need support and advice from peers.
RSVPs are requested but not required. Participants who attend all four sessions will receive a certificate.
The class will meet four times, 12-2:30PM, and include lunch: 1/12, 1/15, 1/21, and 1/28.
Please do not just show up to meetings after the first one. We will share the locations for all of the meetings with participants who attend the first meeting on 1/12/26.
