As the Baby Boomer generation enters retirement age, they are bringing with them an awareness of the need to be engaged in their community, be true to themselves and feel welcomed in one’s own home. Many underrepresented communities, such as the LGBTQ older population, do not identify with traditional senior housing communities, nor feel safe or welcome despite the social advancement in equal rights in the past decades. The Pryde is New England’s first LGBTQ friendly senior housing, with 74 residential units and an LGBTQ community center scheduled to welcome seniors in early 2024.
This talk will discuss the development path of The Pryde, and how the project was enacted through partnerships between the not-for-profit LGBTQ Senior Housing Inc., Pennrose, a national developer of affordable housing, and the Boston community. Philippe Saad, Co-founder of LGBTQ Senior Housing Inc, principal at DiMella Shaffer, and architect of The Pryde, will highlight how this partnership accelerated the process of finding an appropriate site, receiving funding, and moving through construction. Philippe will also discuss the strategies adopted to design a community that specifically addresses the unique needs of the LGBTQ and Boston communities and how the building was intentionally planned to be an inclusive home and community.
