DESCRIPTION:An implantable soft robotic platform for enhanced drug delivery
 \n\nTuesday\, March 8\, 2022\n11 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. EST\n>>Register for t
 his Zoom webinar.\n\nDebkalpa Goswami\, Postdoctoral Associate\nInstitute
for Medical Engineering & Science (IMES)\n\nFibrous capsule formation\, an
d its effect on molecular transport\, can be detrimental to the long-term
efficacy of implantable drug delivery devices\, especially when precise sp
atial and temporal control is necessary for safe and effective therapy del
ivery. In this talk\, Dr. Goswami will describe an implantable platform wh
ich can overcome the diffusional barrier of the fibrous capsule to achieve
enhanced transport of small and macromolecular therapy using multiple syn
ergistic soft robotic strategies.\n\nUsing this platform\, small amplitude
dynamic actuation (preconditioning) applied to subcutaneous tissue in mic
e leads to a downstream functional effect: enhanced passive transport of i
nsulin (a model macromolecule) and glycemic control. Furthermore\, rapid a
ctuation of the platform at the time of drug delivery can accelerate trans
port via convective fluid flow and overcome diffusional limitations caused
by the fibrous capsule.\n\nThis soft actuatable platform has potential cl
inical utility for mediating and overcoming the host fibrotic response\, l
eading to enhanced delivery of drug therapy for a variety of indications\,
  such as diabetes.\n\n----------------------------------------------------
---\n\nNano Explorations is a virtual seminar series powered by MIT.nano t
hat features presentations by MIT students and postdocs on their work in n
 anoscience\, nanotechnology\, and other advanced research fields.\n\nThe s
eries was launched as a way to keep our nano community connected during th
e COVID-19 pandemic. Presentations take place once a month and are open to
any interested viewers.\n\nRead more about past and upcoming Nano Explora
 tions at mitnano.mit.edu/nano-explorations.
