DESCRIPTION:Methane vs. CO2 in climate policy: The problem with global warm
ing potenials\n\nGreenhouse gases differ amongst each other in two primary
characteristics: their atmospheric\n\nlifetime and their radiative effici
ency. These lead to dramatically different kinds of relations\n\nbetween e
missions rate and warming\, with great implications for climate policy. Th
 e widely\n\nused family of metrics\, n-year Global Warming Potentials\, do
not adequately reflect the actual\n\nconsequences of emission control str
ategies embracing both short-lived and long-lived gases\,\n\nand in typica
l cases exaggerate the urgency of methane emissions abatement. The stock\n
\nphrase typically used in most recent journalism\, that “Methane is 80X
worse than CO2 over a 20\n\nyear period” is particularly misleading. Th
is issue has particularly important consequences for\n\nthe impact of live
stock-based agriculture on climate.\n\nAbout this Series: Supported by the
Houghton Fund\, Houghton Lecturers are distinguished visitors from outsid
e MIT invited by the EAPS Program in Atmospheres\, Oceans and Climate to s
pend a period of time\, ranging from a week to several months\, as scienti
sts-in-residence within our Program. For more information and Zoom passwor
