DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: Gonzalo Cao Labora (MIT)\n\nTitle: SMOOTH I
MPLODING SOLUTIONS FOR 3D COMPRESSIBLE FLUIDS\n\nAbstract: \n\n We wi
ll talk about singularity formation for the 3D isentropic compressible Eul
er and Navier-Stokes equations for ideal gases. These equations describe t
he motion of a compressible ideal gas\, which is characterized by a parame
ter called adiabatic constant. Finite time singularities for generic adiab
atic constants were found in the recent work of Merle\, Raphaël\, Rodnian
ski and Szeftel.\n\n We will construct a new family of profiles corres
ponding to the largest possible self-similar exponent. In particular\, thi
s allows us to drop the genericity assumption and construct smooth self-si
milar profiles for all values of the adiabatic constant. This provides the
first known smooth self-similar profile for monoatomic gases. We also pre
sent a different stability analysis around those profiles that allows us t
o show singularity formation for initial data with constant density at inf
inity. These results are joint work with Tristan Buckmaster and Javier Gó
 mez-Serrano.
