DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: Lisa Manning (Syracuse University)\n\nTITLE: What
do guitar strings and ballons have in common with biological networks and
tissues?\n\nABSTRACT:\n\nBoth guitar strings and balloons are floppy unle
ss rigidified by geometrically induced pre-stresses. The same kind of pre
stress-induced rigidity transition in under-constrained materials has more
recently been discussed in the context of disordered biopolymer networks
and models for biological tissues. Here\, we propose a general approach t
o quantitatively describe such transitions. Based on a minimal length fun
ction\, which scales linearly with intrinsic fluctuations in the system an
d quadratically with shear strain\, we make concrete predictions about the
elastic response of these materials\, which we verify numerically and whi
ch are consistent with previous experiments. Finally\, our approach may p
rovide a gateway towards connecting macroscopic elastic properties of diso
rdered materials to their microscopic structure.
