DESCRIPTION:Software Carpentries aims to help researchers get their work do
ne in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic research computin
g skills. This hands-on introductory workshop will cover basic concepts and
tools. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply wh
at they have learned to their own research problems.\n\nThis workshop will
cover an introduction to Git and GitHub for version control. Version contro
l is the lab notebook of the digital world: it’s what professionals use to
keep track of what they’ve done and to collaborate with other people. Every
large software development project relies on it\, and most programmers use
it for their small jobs as well. And it isn’t just for software: books\, p
apers\, small data sets\, and anything that changes over time or needs to b
e shared can and should be stored in a version control system.\n\nNo prior
knowledge is required\; this workshop is geared for complete beginners.\n\n
This event takes place in person on the MIT campus over three days\, from 1
0am to 4pm\, in 45-801 (Schwarzman College of Computing).\n\nThis workshop
is part of a three day series on practical software carpentry. Register for
1\, 2 or all 3 days. Please go to each workshop to register for it separat
 ely:\n\nTuesday\, Jan 13: Introduction to Unix Shell\nWednesday\, Jan 14: I
 ntroduction to Git/GitHub\nThursday\, Jan 15: Introduction to Python\nFor m
ore advanced topics in computing\, look for the other Practical Computing w
orkshops during IAP.\n\nImportant: After registering please follow the setu
p instructions on our website and download the Bash shell\, a text editor\,
Git and GitHub desktop ahead of time.\n\nThe Carpentries workshops have a
code of conduct.\n\nRegistration is open to MIT affiliates\; non-MIT affili
