Recent advances in idealized modeling and theoretical development
Abstract: Idealized models are important tools for understanding the behaviors of comprehensive climate models, and for addressing some of the fundamental questions in atmospheric science. In this talk, I will discuss two new additions to the model hierarchy, namely a dry GCM with passive water vapor and clouds (https://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/full/10.1175/JCLI-D-17-0723.1), and a highly simplified moist GCM with full radiative transfer (https://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/full/10.1175/JCLI-D-17-0723.1), and substantiate their utility in understanding a range of problems such as mid-latitude cloud feedback, ITCZ, monsoon and MJO.
About this series: The Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Sack Lunch Seminar Series is an informal seminar series within PAOC that focuses on more specialized topics than the PAOC Colloquium. Seminar topics include all research concerning the science of atmosphere, ocean and climate. The seminars usually take place on Wednesdays from 12-1pm. The presentations are either given by an invited speaker or by a member of PAOC and can focus on new research or discussion of a paper of particular interest. Contact: sacklunch-committee@mit.edu
