About this Event
84 MASSACHUSETTS AVE, Cambridge, MA 02139
http://ssomit.mit.eduThe Secular Society of MIT hosts weekly discussions on a variety of topics related to nontheism, skepticism, and secular humanism. Past discussion topics have included secular governance, using humor when discussing religion, secular perspectives on education, a humanistic view of morality, skepticism regarding popular health claims, and many more. By running these, we aim to provide a community space for nonbelievers to meet, make friends, discuss matters of collective concern, and stay informed and organized.
We provide free hot tea, hot chocolate, and assorted sweet and savory snacks to keep everyone's energy up.
Discussions are intended to last about an hour, but usually run over due to the copious enthusiasm. All interested in dialogue and learning are welcome to attend.
This week's topic: Blasphemy and Law (International Blasphemy Rights Day is on SEP/30)
- What constitutes blasphemy? Is it different from any criticism or irreverence?
- Do laws against mocking some or all religious beliefs serve any positive purpose? e.g. deterring vigilantism
- Do any religions actually encourage or condone blasphemy laws? Is it an inevitable outcome of doctrine?
- Can events promoting active blasphemy be counterproductive to eradication of blasphemy laws? e.g. use in propaganda
Location: W20-450 (4th floor, MIT Student Center, https://whereis.mit.edu/?go=W20)
