DESCRIPTION:This fall\, join MIT's Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food System
s Lab (J-WAFS) for a series of seminars given by J-WAFS visiting scholars f
rom around the world:\n\nChandra Madramootoo\, the Distinguished James McGi
ll Professor in the Department of Bioresource Engineering at McGill Univers
ity. His research focuses on irrigation and water management engineering\,
climate change and greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture\, and agricultur
al research for development.\n Joanne Tingey-Holyoak\, an associate profes
sor of accounting and professorial lead at the University of South Australi
 a. She uses accounting\, financial\, and biophysical data to improve agricu
ltural decision-making\, including through developing industry-based irriga
tor decision-making tools.\n Neda Trifkovic\, an assistant professor in the
Department of Economics at the University of Copenhagen. Her research inte
rests include development and agricultural economics\, contract farming\, e
xtreme weather events\, and other related areas.\n The umbrella theme for a
ll three seminars is: Climate and agricultural adaptation and mitigation.\n
Overview: As the effects of climate change continue to threaten water and f
ood sources around the globe\, there is a need for both adaptation and miti
 gation strategies.\n\nSeminar 1 -- NOW PASSED\n\nDate: World Food Day\, Wed
 nesday\, October 16\, 2024\, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. ET\n\nTopic: Is irrigation t
he answer to agriculture’s climate challenges?\n\nSpeakers: Chandra A. Madr
amootoo and Joanne Tingey-Holyoak\n\nInfo: This seminar will look at the in
terplay between climate change and irrigated agriculture. Madramootoo will
focus on the implications of irrigation on greenhouse gas emissions\, and T
ingey-Holyoak will discuss how an accounting-based decision-making support
tool for irrigation can help adapt agriculture to more variable weather pat
 terns. \n\nSeminar 2\n\nDate: Thursday\, November 7\, 2024\, 3:30 – 5:00 p
.m. ET\n\nTopic: Localized approaches to climate resilience and adaptation
for water and food security\n\nSpeakers: Chandra A. Madramootoo and Neda T
rifkovic\n\nInfo: This seminar will highlight research about adaptation eff
orts in very different geographic regions. Madramootoo will focus on managi
ng impacts of climate change on coastal regions\, and Trifkovic will speak
 about impacts to agroforests.\n\nSeminar 3\n\nDate: Thursday\, November 14\
 , 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. ET\n\nTopic: Economic and environmental sustainability
for smallholder farmers\n\nSpeakers: Neda Trifkovic\n\nInfo: In this talk\,
Trifkovic will discuss how smallholder farmers in Mozambique are adapting
to climate change in order to protect their economic livelihoods\, and how
their strategies fit with broader approaches to agricultural development.\n
The seminars are free and open to the MIT and surrounding academic communit
ies or anyone interested in these topics.\n\nAll three seminars will take p
lace in the J-WAFS conference room (E38\, third floor).\n \nRegister for on
e\, two\, or all three seminars today. Advance registration is required.
