Title : Introduction to Random Plane Geometry
Abstract :
If lengths 1 and 2 are assigned randomly to each edge in Z^2, what are the fluctuations of distances between far away points?
This problem is open, yet we know, in great detail, what to expect. The directed landscape, a universal random plane geometry, provides the answer to such questions.
What is the directed landscape? What does it teach us about longest increasing subsequences in random permutations, about random polymers, about models for spread of infection, about tetris, about random Schrodinger operators, and about cell biology?
We welcome you to participate in the up and coming Probability Seminar of Americas, and to gather socially afterwards at a “virtual cafe.” Please come and welcome Bálint Virág (U Toronto), Wednesday, Feb 10 at 11 AM Pacific Standard Time (2 PM Eastern Standard Time). Zoom link below!
The purpose of the seminar is to bring together researchers in probability theory, catering primarily to the North and South American Time zones, and to allow time to gather socially at a "virtual cafe” (bring your own drink) after the seminar. (Here people can walk around with a virtual avatar and interact with groups-including shared white boards, etc…)
The seminar will take place on Wednesdays and will usually consist of one talk at 11am Pacific Standard Time (2 PM Eastern Standard Time). We aim for 2 or more talks per month.
The seminar will be using the Zoom platform, and afterwards a link will be given to a virtual social gathering taking place on a different platform. Talks will be recorded and available on YouTube (with permission).
If you would like to get future announcements you can either follow the seminar website and calendar -or join the seminar mailing group - HERE.
