✝️✡️📖⛓ Did the Old Testament Endorse Slavery?

Friday, May 07, 2021 at 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Virtual Event

Was the "slavery" permitted and regulated by the Hebrew Bible really just debt/indentured servitude? What treatment of slaves was permitted or prohibited in Israelite religious law? Were slaves just property in that society? How did people end up in slavery to Israelites? Join us for the 7th subject of our "Course 0" discourse series, as Assyriologist Dr Joshua Bowen addresses common apologetic defenses of slavery in the Hebrew Bible.

About our speaker:
Dr. Joshua Bowen graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2017, with a Ph.D. in Assyriology, minoring in Hebrew Bible. His dissertation was entitled “A Preliminary Study of the Sumerian Curricular and Lamentational Texts from the Old Babylonian City of Kish”, which was reworked and published in 2020 under the title “Learning to Pray in a Dead Language: Education and Invocation in Ancient Sumerian”. Joshua was a Fulbright Scholar in 2014-2015, and was awarded the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (D.A.A.D.) in the same year. This allowed him to spend the year in Tubingen, Germany, working with Dr. Konrad Volk on his dissertation project.
As well as his Ph.D., Joshua holds a Master of Theology in Old Testament from Capital Bible Seminary, where he was awarded the Outstanding Thesis Award for his thesis entitled “The Meaning of the Divine Name El Shaddai”. He also holds an M.A. in Near Eastern Studies from Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Science in Religion from Liberty University. In addition to his book on Sumerian education and prayers, he has published “Did the Old Testament Endorse Slavery?” and co-authored “Learn to Read Ancient Sumerian: An Introduction for the Complete Beginner” with his wife, Megan Lewis. He is currently completing volume one of “The Atheist Handbook to the Old Testament”, which will be published later this summer.
