About this Event

Join the MIT Internet Policy Research Initiative for an intimate conversation with Stanford University professors Rob Reich, Mehran Sahami, and Jeremy Weinstein as we discuss their newly published book, "System Error: Where Big Tech Went Wrong and How We Can Reboot." System Error exposes the roots of our current predicament: how big tech’s relentless focus on optimization reinforces discrimination, erodes privacy, displaces workers, and pollutes the information we get. Armed with an understanding of how technologists think and exercise their power, the authors reveal how we can hold that power to account. Now, as the dominance of big tech becomes an explosive societal conundrum, they share their provocative insights and concrete solutions to help everyone understand what is happening, what is at stake, and what we can do to control technology instead of letting it control us.
This fireside chat is hosted by Danny Weitzner, founder and director of the MIT Internet Policy Research Initiative.
Discussants: Danny Weitzner, MIT and Josephine Wolff, Tufts University
The MIT community is welcome both in-person and virtually. If you are on Covid Pass, please have your MIT physical ID card or mobile barcode ready to scan.
This event is open to the public via Zoom only.
