TLL Speaker Series: Rigor as Inclusive Practice

Thursday, October 06, 2022 at 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Virtual Event

On Thursday, October 6, at 1:00 pm (ET),  Jamiella Brooks, Ph.D., Director of Student Equity & Inclusion Initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School,  and Julie McGurk, Ph.D., Director of Faculty Teaching Initiatives at Yale University, will present their talk titled "Rigor as Inclusive Practice" in TLL's kick-off to our 2022-23 Speaker Series: Reigniting the Spark of Learning.

Do you worry that you need to forfeit rigor to create an inclusive learning environment? Evidence suggests that true inclusion necessitates rigor to empower all of our students to grow, build on their strengths, and learn. Incorrect assumptions that rigor and inclusion are in opposition lead to teaching practices that are neither inclusive nor equitable and that lead to unnecessary stress.

Drs. Brooks and McGurk will illuminate how the term "rigor" is often misused or misunderstood in this interactive Zoom workshop and will guide participants to a more inclusive, substantive, (and dare we say, more rigorous!) enactment of rigor in their teaching.
