Making a Social Impact Through Games & Augmented Reality

Learn how the nonprofit organization, POTIONS & PIXELS, tackles a variety of issues through innovative approaches like creating games and apps as well as workforce development projects, community events, and youth programs. The talk will also explore their augmented reality work, including their latest project, KnowCLT, an augmented reality app that allows users to explore the rise and demise of Charlotte’s Brooklyn neighborhood, once the largest and most vibrant black community in the Carolinas, through narration, photos, poetry, and the voices of former residents.

Michael Zytkow is the Founder and Executive Director of POTIONS & PIXELS, a nonprofit organization that utilizes games, art, and technology to create social impact. POTIONS & PIXELS combines Michael’s love of games with his passion for community activism. A graduate of Wake Forest University, Michael taught high school before spending the last decade as a community organizer, working on a variety of issues. Michael worked on various environmental projects while at Greenpeace and focused on improving the built environment while working at a local sustainability organization.

Our lecture series is made possible by generous support from the MacArthur Foundation and the Ford Foundation’s JustFilms program.
