Abstract: In this talk, Gerardo will be telling his “story” on his journey to MIT, which started in California a long time ago! He will share his experience from being the first in his family to go to college, pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work, being a clinician in the Boston area, transitioning to higher education, and coming to MIT in 2014.

Bio: Gerardo grew up in a very small town in Jalisco, México, came to the United States in 1990, and has lived in Massachusetts since 1997. Before going into higher education in 2003, he worked in the Boston area as a clinical social worker with children and families. He always wanted to work with college students and eventually started working in admissions at a local college. He came to MIT in 2014 and later became the Associate Dean and Co-Director of S3. He has been at MIT for 8 years. One of the main reasons that he came to MIT was to provide direct support to undergraduate students. He finds that MIT students are extremely engaged in their MIT college life and they are passionate about solving the world’s issues. He has found it to be a humbling and learning experience to be working with students. On a personal note, Gerardo speaks two languages, Spanish and English, studied French in Canada while being abroad, and has traveled to Italy where he learned Italian as well. He is one of 9 siblings and is the first one to attend college. He loves sports, particularly fútbol, which he has played since he was a kid, and also did track and field. While at MIT he has tried his best to follow as many of the varsity and intramural sports.
