You Can’t Get There from Here: On the Gap Between Realist Theory and “Realist” Foreign Policy

Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at 12:00pm to 1:30pm

E40-496, limited to MIT Community only

SSP Wednesday Seminar with speaker Andrew Kydd, University of Wisconsin-Madison

In this seminar, Prof. Kydd will discuss the realist paradigm in international relations, and examine to what extent its supporters can reasonably draw realist policy conclusions from its theoretical research program. The discusison will include demonstrations of Prof. Kydd's arguments with a simple game theoretic model of NATO enlargement, and then trace a pattern of a proposed realist theory-policy disconnect from Morgenthau’s opposition to the Vietnam War, to the nuclear debates of the 1980s, to recent debates over grand strategy, “liberal hegemony” and “restraint.”
